Literally WHO is declaring this a pandemic and we still have people downplaying it.

Well it was obvious it was a pandemic, it spread everywhere, no breaking news there

Stop downplaying public health threats like this.

There are vulnerable people in the world:  old people, children, poor people, people already living with compromised health. Sure many of us will survive this, but this disease will threaten the most vulnerable of the society.

You can get it and not display any symptoms at all because you are healthy. Okay. But how about you parents? Sibling, nephews or nieces? Friends with poor health conditions? If you come in contact with them and you are a carrier, they are easy target for this virus.

Don't downplay it but also don't panic. Always wash your hands. Sanitize your tables, doorknobs, elevator buttons, etc. Stay healthy people.

I'm surprised they didn't sooner but I understand they didnt wanna have the public panic, but at how fast this is spreading and death rates climbing...they cant ignore it anymore and have to call it what it is

Whatever chaos ensues from here on out...be safe out there kids

Last outbreak of this magnitude was in 2009, and even then the death rate and hospitalisation was lower.

Hospitals were overwhelmed in many countries but not like we see now in China, Iran or Italy. It’s starting to happen in WS and France as well.

????????????????? what are you smoking sis?

the last pandemic (H1N1 flu virus) literally killed 575,400 people .  In the US alone, more than 13'000 people died.

Infected people? 500 MILLION WW and 61 MILLION IN THE US

so no...corona virus is nothing compared to other stuff we had to deal with. Even if we had to wait 3 to 4 year for a vaccine (which won't be the case btw) it still wouldn't come near those numbers.

Let's hope that Coronavirus will not reach these levels of disaster.

of course not. It caused almost 4000 deaths WW (in the US alone the last pandemic did 13'000 deaths). We need to look at the big picture here.

Corona virus isn't funny and being hill is always annoying , but people need to stop believing everything they see on Facebook and TV that act like this is the return of the plague. It's cringy A.F.

Death rate for people between 15 and 50 years old is like 0.02%. It literally means u have more chances of getting hit by a car 4 times in 24h than getting sick. For people between 60 and 90 its 14% (still a small minority that dies .... )

Another fact is that (and most people don't know) from the 100.000 infected, at least 40.000 have healed. So yeah

One person in NY potentially infected 50 people within a short time. I hope this declaration spurs agencies to action in containing this and improving testing measures.

I'm so tired of hearing people talk about the effects on the economy and how it will impact events and holidays - there are bigger things at stake with this.

I'm scared for what will happen when it starts to spread in countries that don't have the healthcare systems in place to deal with a mass outbreak like Africa where 7 Million people are living with HIV and thus compromised immune systems.

It might not scare some of you now but give it time and it's just going to get worse. It'll be months before this is under control and a vaccine is ready for the public.

Yeah but it's only been 2 months since this virus spread out so these statistic are just early reports. It took a year to control the H1N1 Influenza virus. So we may never know how this virus will affect us in the long run.

So it is very important to tell people to always practice good hygiene and sanitation to help keep these numbers low.

the problem is that u can catch the virus just by breathing. washing ur hands can help if u touch ur face, but ultimately they use that phrase to make ppl feel like they can stop it and protect themselves. The reality is that if ur in the room or 4meters or less from someone whos infected and u breathe? Good luck to u

Weird that they'd say this considering "pandemic" has no real definition. In other words, it's not like a "omg we're moving from outbreak to PANDEMIC status! Red alert red alert!" :selena:

It's crazy how this thing caught us off guard like . wash your hands, kids, protect your grandparents :huntyga:

It's attitudes like this that concern me for my grandparents' safety :smh:

14% of 60+ people is a lot of freaking people and they don't deserve to have their health disregarded because some of y'all think this is "just a cold" :air:

I know that's not really what you're saying, electric mary, you're just providing some perspective, but there is very much a cause for concern.

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh and it made you think I didn't care for those people. I do. but at the end of the day, a regular flu is more dangerous for them than corona is
