Some people can work well into their seventies or later, but that needs to be a choice, not a requirement. 67 I think is ok for now. It helps a little bit to compensate for much longer life spans but it's not so old that most ppl can't manage I think it's a reasonable age Most Countries who raised their retirement raised it to around
Luc 4,776
64 is a reasonable age, so is 65 imo. Even 66 is still acceptable in my opinion. However, to me it's a bit sad that, instead of using the economic growth of the past decades to be able to work less, we use it for tax cuts for wealthy, corporations and the like. Yes, populations are ageing, but economic growth is increasing more quickly than the population is ageing. France has quite a high fertility rate, their boomer generation isn't nearly as big as in Germany. It's dishonest to reduce the wealth tax by billions, to then cut social security funding saying it's 'unsustainable'. Yeah, it gets unsustainable if you don't levy taxes. Midnightrush891 727
It’s so sad, treating our elderly like they haven’t earned the right to retire!!! I’ve worked since I was 14, and you mean to tell me everything I’ve put into social security doesn’t matter? Some people once they hit a certain age can’t perform the same, and if they are doing physical work companies might view them as someone who can’t perform. I dunno, I could go on a huge rant. Moral of the story, let’s treat our elderly with respect and let them enjoy their golden years! CHEESE AND RICE!

HermioneT 1,998
I think we need to quit the idea/concept of a life in full-time work and then a nice retirement phase from 65+ onwards for everyone equally. I personally would prefer models such as part-time work (supported by basic income for everyone) and more recognition for care work and voluntary work in economy. Rigid concepts and models like a fixed retirement age need to adapt to the individualisation of most post-modern societies - so everyone can more or less freely decided when to retire with how much pension (while being secured with a basic income that covers basic needs). E.g I rather would work part time and earn less now that I am young than speculate on a long and easy retirement phase later in life - because I sadly know so many people who never made it to their retirement age. So I don't mind working longer than the retirement age in part time/ in voluntary work - if I stay healthy that long (and if not, I at least did not live alone on the prospect of having to work xxxx years before the good life starts). HeavyCapiLover 4,389
They really waited coronavirus to become a major crisis to do that. They are forbiding protests with more than 5000 people due to corona, and they know very wall that most people don't want this new law.

Most people shouldn't have an issue working till their late 60s tbh "Most" indeed but there are still quite a lot of physical jobs. My uncle worked at a plastic fabric for many years and he started having big back issues and muscular problems after only 12 years doing it. When he hears about this reform pushing him to work more years it drives him crazy and it's understandable. Quite a lot of people are in cases like that. 9 hours ago, Economy said: And if a job is more physically demanding u can always exempt workers in some industries from the increase the same way teachers can retire early It was a possibility but it's not what this reform will do for physically demanding jobs so they lost an occasion to make it fair. Macron boasted about supressing specific retirement regimes some industries had and said it would make things fair with "everybody having the same universal retirement system" despite job conditions varying drastically... So he was always far to look for a case by case compromise. The joke is that he finally recreated specific regimes in his so called "universal" system and it's not even the ones who suffers the most due to their jobs who have it! Some industries got it because of their nuisance potential like transport industries which could have been blocking the country and were "seduced" this way for example. 9 hours ago, Economy said: For decades there was no adjustments whatsoever. What do people expect? Well in France the government already takes a BIG part of your salary each month in "social contributions" so here you do expect it to go back to the "safety net" and having to work more years cause all the money taken from your wage each month is not really spent on workers retirement plans can logically piss you off at some point. ^^ I don't know for other people but french people expect a lifetime of giving a lot of the money they make to the government to "pay off". Spoiler And let's not even talk about the fact that this reform will be validated without an actual vote from the chambers which is undemocratic af. Guess what part was supposed to be discussed and to potentially receive amendments in chambers talk?.. WORD ARDUOUSNESS! Let pass on the doubt of corruption with the ties of the government with the private retirement funds groups which will greatly enjoy the reform. One of their leader even just received the highest medal a french citizen can have... PS: With the covid19 making public gatherings soon to be forbidden, they chose the right moment to force this reform after nearly 5 months of protests... Sorry for the long ass text but I hope you get a better understanding of the french reaction now!

My uncle is not from France but he came here and they gave him money to buy furniture in his appartment, free dental treatment, free subway card, and money every month, to help 'immigrants' i suppose who are 'poor'. Except, my uncle makes around 5k in his other country... They also gave him money for his kids who started school in France. I think there are many things we give out to people who don't need it, too much help for pointless things and we end up losing money every month, a huge chunk of the salary gone, for people like this... Life is long but not that long I'm not saying it's exactly pleasent... But ppl always want: - more money to healthcare - more money to education - more money to infrastructure - more generous social programs - they don't want retirement deductions raised but then don't want age raised either despite significantly aged population I know it's easy to complain but ppl always want more from the government than what is realistic I think making sure the rich pay their fair share can definitely help but it still wouldn't meet all the demands ppl want. Even if we do that, some things still gotta give Not reforming retirement age to deal with significantly aged population is a particularly costly thing to do
