Conservatives are more likely to be friends with liberals than vice versa

It's so behind the times to think that every conservative is a bigoted, racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, anti-Semetic xenophobe. I used to think that way too. But then I discovered some conservatives who weren't like that. In fact, some seemed so liberal that I assumed they were and was shocked to discover otherwise. It made me realise that I'd been de-humanising conservatives all these years and actually needed to get to know people first before judging them based on their political allegiance.

And right now, while I definitely don't agree with conservatives on everything, they certainly SEEM more sane than the average liberal. I remember when liberals were so logical, they kept their feet on the ground and used common sense, that's why I wanted to be part of them. But in the last few years, so many of them have turned into militant, intolerant, over-exaggerating, lying and living in a fantasy world. It's not the liberalism I once knew and loved. I follow my own brand of it these days because I can't stand what its become. It doesn't surprise me at all that conservatives are more open-minded towards friendship with liberals right now because they're actually wanting to start discussion, they're proud of their opinions and believe them to be right and want to share them with others. Liberals meanwhile are on a mission to shut discussion down as they don't want to hear anything that doesn't align with their world view and believes no one else should hear it it either. I'm liberal and even I'm wary about being friends with liberals right now. I just wish everyone would stop playing identity politics. It's exhausting to have to deal with such polarising opinions, day in, day out, without any compromise.

Maybe it's a good thing that people take things like fundamental rights over superficial friendships that only involve small talk and hanging out.

If your opinion is "Jews and gays and blacks are bad and I'm entitled to it," then it's a good thing I'm not friends with you. :rip:

I agree that certain traits in people make them unattractive as friends or associates ..

but what you listed aren't 'conservative' ideals or opinions...

just because some people actually have bigoted homphobic insensitive opinions and claim to be conservative …

Not to defend liberals too much, but many people see things like racism and xenophobia (correctly I might add) as a fundamental affront to their ability to exist in society, so this stat doesn't surprise me. Comparing that to liberals being pro gun control or pro-choice... as much as conservatives feel very strongly about those issues, I really don't think the average conservative feels their ability to succeed as a citizen in the economy, work force, have social relationships, be safe, etc. is impeded by the potential of pro-choice legislation or gun control or other issues of that nature that are very polarized

So, all conservatives are the same in your mind? You speak such bias and use sweeping generalisations and yet have the audacity to laugh at my post. When you do that, I consider it an insult to my intelligence. KNOCK IT OFF. And by the way, conservatives aren't the same all over the world, but then, an international viewpoint is hardly ever understood by Americans round here. Maybe it would shock you to know that so many of the groups you claim to stand behind in their battle against discrimination are actually a lot more conservative than you would think, they just won't admit it to themselves. The intolerance I've seen in discriminated groups is shocking and yet we're encouraged to see them as more progressive than privileged groups. There's intolerance everywhere, in every group.

But why should we argue? We're both on the same side, albeit, you're more extreme. That's what the world's become. At least conservatives tend to have each others backs. Liberals are just in-fighting right now and conservatives are laughing at us for it.

I may get dragged to hell here for saying this I already have before but I agree with u

I side with liberals in terms of tolerance, acceptance and wanting a fair society for all

But there are many progressives now a day (I'm not saying all) that are very agressive with purity tests like you can agree on 80% of the stuff but if there's 20% in a conversation you don't see eye to eye they get so upset

I've been called a conservative rantist before and Corporist when I was having a discussion about some stuff I don't agree with Bernie. And I agree with his idea on many things and I was not dragging him. I only didn't agree with how far to go on everything that's all and I was not disrespectful about it :madge:

Also on social matters there's those SJW extremists and cancel culture people that have to nit pick at every tiny little thing that isn't 100% politically correct now a days it's getting tiring

Basically there's a good portion of liberals and leftists that have crossed over to an extreme that is no longer based on logic or common sense but just agression on anything that challanges them :triggered:

Again I'm not saying this is liberals as a whole. But the portion of people like this I think is on the rise tho :sis:

:Where did I say or imply all conservatives are the same?

I suggested that people on the left and on the right may have different levels of acceptance of intolerance and there's a perfectly rational explanation for the discrepancy. Some conservatives are very racist, bigoted, etc. These things are a lot harder to just "overlook" and get along with anyway in terms of friendships and social relationships than what the rights problems with the left tend to be, so it doesnt surprise me that more conservatives would consider liberals their friends than vice versa. Not all conservatives are racist bigoted etc, I'm literally just talking about the ones who are :emma:

I don't make a habit of going out of my way to make friends with racist or bigoted people because its mentally draining and not good for my health, not because i hate them all and think they are inherently evil or stupid or whatever. So in my anecdotal understanding, I just said the statistic fits my experience and that of many other people on the left that I know. I can be acquaintances with mostly anyone, but I think being a "friend" is an active choice not a passive one, and I don't think of people with whom i share such fundamental disagreements with as being my friend because I quite literally cannot talk to them on the same level as other people, and IMO friends shouldn't have to hide large parts of their identity in order to not upset the other one deeply. I'm not interested in hiding part of myself for some friends and being myself with others personally. Still, I do have conservative friends. Even conservative LGBT friends. They just arent racist or openly bigoted, or I wouldn't be friends with them.

And I "laughed" at your post because anyone who has been on this website long enough knows that what you're saying is really textbook reactionarism and a "regressive left" mentality - e.g. the left is anti free speech, intolerant, militant, has a victim complex etc. etc. It's your standard alt-right youtube video or reddit thread package

...and while I don't doubt your personal experiences, it just isnt a phenomenon that has any empirical backing, so its just a generalization at the end of the day, the same kind you accuse me and liberals of making.  Also, making even partial judgments on people's sanity is a massive generalization as well, so I thought it was funny in a kind of ironic way. Being liberal or conservative has nothing to do with ones sanity or mental state, nor one's ability to act and think rationally or logically... AND I know that you specifically get into heated discussions on this website on social issues where you take a hard right or conservative position and are completely unable to defend it against people pointing out flawed logic, reasoning, or lacking evidence and research :rip: So its just really interesting to me that you'd make a "liberals are bad at common sense and logic" argument with all of those factors considered.

I know, it's like you have to be all in or you're out in their eyes. There are liberals out there who are anti-abortion, but you won't see them making a big deal about it because they know they'd get ostracised. I always say people are entitled to their opinion and liberalism used to be all about that. Now they want to censor opinion, nuance, difference, so we're all the same. Even bully people into changing their minds and want every different opinion to be viewed as hate speech. So many SJWs are totally covert narcissists as well. They match all the signs and SJWism is the perfect vehicle to hide behind and mask it as genuine concern.

Your post that I quoted blatantly generalised all conservatives as being racist and xenophobic and that's why liberals don't want to be friends with them. It's literally what you opened with. I don't know what post you're reading.

You didn't say any mention of "some." You're only saying it because I called you out on it. I'm not saying you have to make friends with people who are so clearly bigoted, I never claimed that to begin with. What I'm taking issue with is the assumptions that all conservatives are bad people. It's just as intolerant as any stereotype that conservatives ever made of us. Ann Coulter once wrote a book called How To Speak To A Democrat (If You Absolutely Have To). Some of them call liberalism a disease. I'm sure you think that's awful, right? But liberals do the same to conservatives in reverse and then claim to be the super tolerant ones. Cognitive dissonance, folks. I'm surprised that you say you have some conservative friends. Why do you always spout such inaccurate, hateful stuff about conservatives, then, if you know exceptions to the rule?

People have been using the laugh reaction as a replacement for excuse me no and it's tired. It even adds to our reputation total, making us look more popular, but they seem too dense to catch onto that. :ladyhaha: If you don't like what I have to say, just don't react to it at all or quote me explaining what issue you have with it. Unlike a lot of liberals, I will actually respond to criticism about my beliefs. I take laugh reactions very seriously as it undermines the person's intelligence and I am far from unintelligent. And you're not helping your case by trotting out smug terms like "textbook ____" and "regressive." I am much more complex than you give me credit for and everything that I write here is the result of extensive research. It can't be written off with one of your liberal buzzwords. And I'm not remotely alt-right. They would hate me anyway. They wouldn't understand a woman like me, who seems like a walking contradiction, who seems one thing one moment and another thing the next. I don't know how often I have to keep repeating "I'm a liberal" before you lot will actually believe me. Saying I'm otherwise over and over doesn't make it true.

You don't doubt my personal experiences, you say? But you then immediately doubt them by saying they have no empirical backing. Contradiction if ever there was one. And just because there's no empirical backing doesn't mean it's not true. People tend not to do studies on how liberals vs conservatives conduct themselves, it's considered kinda unprofessional to pursue such stuff. That's considered left to internet commentators. But we all live our lives observing differences between liberals and conservatives and we know what they are. Consider yourself very lucky that you've never seen truly awful liberals. Because it's sickening. And some of them are frauds, just pretending to genuinely care, they're getting up to all sorts behind the scenes. There were liberal men who were proudly supporting feminism and women who ended up getting accused of sexual misconduct by the MeToo movement. Tells you a lot about hypocrisy, doesn't it? And the sanity judgements I wasn't meaning form a serious psychological evaluation, just the general way in which we use the word sane. See, that's another annoying liberal thing - placing unnecessary focus on words that don't need to be focused on and misreading it as sinister or a way to disregard a person's entire argument. And I have never taken a hard right viewpoint on this site in my life. I don't know how many times I have to scream "I'm LIBERAL" from the rooftops. Just because it's not your form of liberalism doesn't mean it's not liberalism. And I do defend it with evidence, thank you. It's my opponents who won't deign to read it, thinking they're above information that comes from a conservative newspaper and are afraid of reading any evidence I provide, for fear that I might be right. That's what truly irritates me about modern liberalism - they won't look at evidence against what they think is the reality of things. Because then they're going to question everything they were led to believe is true up until then and they can't handle it. I, on the other hand, want the truth, no matter how awful it is. I won't be played for a fool and allow myself to be led down a path of misinformation. And once I've seen evidence for something, there's no going back. You know that video of Trump making his comments about p***y grabbing? I bet that made you think "I can never support this man after hearing this" (I did too, let's not mess about). Well, I've seen evidence of stuff that is on that shocking scale involving other elements of life but when I try to show it to liberals, they don't want to know. Because they're only support tea-spilling, mind-blowing evidence when it supports liberal values. Truth is truth, it doesn't care what political side you're on and once I've seen truth, there's no going back. I can still be a liberal, but one with a good head on my shoulders and my feet firmly on the ground.

And most people who I question won't quote me back. They point out all the "flaws" in my logic, I respond back showing they're talking out their ass and they don't respond. I hope they realise that when they do that, it only let's me know that they admitted defeat because my argument was too good. So, don't be so proud not to reply. I'll respect you so much for that.

..And that’s where your morals conflict with another persons. Thanks for proving my point

Science says at conception it’s already human. Within the first few weeks the zygote already has a unique genetic structure different from the mother and fathers. By week 3 there’s already a heartbeat. At what stage do you define humanity ?

There is no scientific consensus on when "humanity" begins. Largely because that a philosophical issue, not a scientific one. And as its philosophy, its a question that gets muddied by religious beliefs.

Science recognizes that fetus have are separate organisms upon conception, due in part that it contains genetic information that does not belong to the mother. However, we don't consider a fetus viable until roughly the 24-week period. That is, that's around the time the fetus can survive outside the womb, bare minimum. It will absolutely not survive outside the womb prior to this time. That is the closest that science will ever get attempting to explain humanity of an individual fetus. It's not that prior to that 24-week mark the fetus is nonviable per se, just that it needs to be at least that far along to be considered viable

I don't want to intrude too much on u guys discussion @StrawberryBlond @ItsTommyBitch but I have to comment on the LMAO reactions ppl use excessively

I too find them annoying and obnoxious and a little rude when they are used simply for disagreeing... Like if u don't agree but don't want to elaborate either just ignore it

I think LMAO as in laughing should be used for something actually funny not to laugh at others opinions

I personally ONLY use LMAO for something I find funny or a joke but I never LMAO at someone regardless of how strongly I disagree with them

I just think it's very unkind... Like imagine those toxic full of themselves ppl who argue on TV debate pannels when u say something they don't agree with... It's so obnoxious

That's what ppl are doing on GGD as well only digitally :madge:

There's too much wrong with this to point out w.o writing a literal essay and I'm tired.

I'm not even a liberal for one, and I don't care if you are either :emma: Some conservatives are racist, and some are not, just like some liberals are racist and some are not. I don't have to qualify every statement I make to point out that not all ____ are X.I am not generalizing, which would be to infer a broad position based on a few specific instances, I am making a broad statement based on a broad understanding of historical context that informs that position. There's a difference -The racism and bigotry present in conservative ideologies is a well documented fact. In America right now CONSERVATIVES elected the most blatantly racist and fascistic president of our lifetimes who has borderline dictator like tendencies because of his racism and blatant xenophobia ("we're gonna build a wall to keep the brown people out!") Racist military and government leaders are spreading all over the country right now, empowered by racist rhetoric and followings.

So, no, excuse me if I don't go out to clarify on a position that is entirely accurate as it is. Racism is a problem for Conservative communities. It doesn't mean all conservatives are racist, but they all have to deal with that reality. My conservative friends aren't conservative because of racism, they are conservative because of economics, and they hate that they have to talk politics with their families because their families ARE RACIST :laughga:  So no, your assumption is incorrect. We get along fine because we are all against racism, no matter where it comes from. I know plenty of racist liberals too, I get around a bit believe it or not!

We've had discussions over shitty and problematic things you have said for YEARS. You have argued truly heinous things about black people and minorities on a bunch of occasions. So, I'm sorry if  "lmao" reacts are petty or whatever, but I genuinely laughed at the idea that someone who has said truly racist and awful things on a myriad of situations for YEARS tried to "uhm, not all conservatives are racist" me. You're a liberal? Good for you, I believe you, but it doesnt make you incapable of racism, as you've correctly pointed out here and that I've never disagreed with in the first place.

And your "extensive research" is often what gets debunked in these situations. Just recently you tried to argue from "research" that

1) Irish people were slaves too.

2) White people werent that responsible for slavery.

3) Because some africans (they weren't black) enslaved other africans (these ones were) it isn't' a big deal,

4) The # of people actually enslaved wasnt that big a number.

and 5) That the actual conditions of slavery itself are overstated.

All of which was totally absolutely false and disgustingly offensive, so miss me with "I do research to support my claims!" Your researching skills need work if all you can find is an alt-right rhetorical framing that literally is used to radicalize people into white supremacy :rip:

Most of these things weren’t policies or even legitimate issues - rather trump not providing special treatment to the LGBTQ. It’s an issue that he attacked Don Lemon (who’s known to go out of his way to attack this administration) and it’s an issue he didnt want to maintain LGBTQ specific sidewalks ? Sure I’ll give you the issues regarding workplace protections but as of now nor ever have their been federal mandates that prevent workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

1) please research the terms fascist and dictator - usually throughout history said rulers didn’t want the public to maintain their inalienable rights of free speech and the right to bear arms. The Democratic Party seems to be the ones with those issues ..

2) points 1-3 are correct. Doesn’t make anything less palatable but there’s a lot of research to confirm those points

Well yeah if your opinion on politics is "I dont care about anyone else besides myself" aka conservatives then you wouldn't have a problem to hang out with someone that is better than you.

Well, seeing as you're always anti-conservative, support liberal viewpoints and live in America (I think?) I naturally assumed you were a liberal. What do you identify as, then? I never said that conservatism doesn't have problems with racism at its core. Of course there's always been fertile breeding ground for racism there. Neither did I claim to be in support of Trump. It's unquestionable that conservatives have been behind a lot of problems lately (although plenty of people who weren't political in any way also voted for Trump, liberals changed minds and some conservatives didn't vote). So, you're arguing over nothing here.

I notice you don't bring up any problems incurred as a result of liberalism. Because they're pretty 50/50, just in different ways. There's more than one way of being problematic and you can be problematic on the same issue despite being on different sides. Each side of the debate is far too extreme for me in this current era.

"Truly henious" things? "Truly racist and awful things?" Massive overexaggeration there. I have always treated black people and minorities well. They've always treated me nicely, I've never had any issue. Just because I want to share the stories of those who had negative experiences because I want to see the perpetrators brought to justice does not make me racist. It makes me somebody who wants no one to be a victim of crime, including minorities. For someone to call me racist is highly offensive to me when I have had nothing but support for every minority group throughout my life. Ever since I was a child, I have always treated everyone with respect, it's in my nature. You don't see my day to day life and the people I defend and cry tears over, you only see a few posts on GGD...and you never see the posts that show the side of me that you don't want to see. For example, did you know what I did last month? Because I documented it here on GGD. @lego - I want you to see this too because I'm sick of you accusing me of racism and liking posts that support accusations of my apparent "racism." Last month, I took a massive leap of bravery by asking someone out for the first time, a man from my work, a man that I barely know as I was so new. His name is Alamaddin, he's a black man with very dark skin, natural black hair, traditional black features and an accent of African origin. Finding out his full name on the sign-in board and realising he was probably Muslim didn't put me off either. Unfortunately, he told me he already has a wife, so it wasn't to be. As it turned out, my interview in the hopes of making my temporary work permanent didn't work out (which is why I asked him out when I did, in case I wasn't coming back), so on my last day, I told a colleague about my embarrassing experience of asking out someone who was already married. I was told "the wife probably lives over there" and I asked what they meant. Turns out, Alamaddin was originally an illegal immigrant from Sudan who came here by himself and worked his way through the system to become legal and likely sends money back to his family in Sudan. So, yeah. All this time, I was having visions of having serious talks with my parents about not standing for any racial insensitivity, potentially having people looking at us and judging us dating, people making unsavoury assumptions about why we were dating, potentially having to be introduced to a different culture and being accepted by a Muslim family, maybe even having an inter-faith wedding and raising mixed children with racial awareness of how they might be treated in life...I was obviously getting ahead of myself, but you get the idea. So, there you go. All this time, I've been thinking: "if the racism accusers on GGD could see me now." Well, now you know. I hope this wakes you up a bit to the real me - someone who wants to find love with anyone I connect with, no matter what they look like or where they come from. I am an advocate for love in all its forms. You lot don't see enough of the real me to make assumptions about who I am but you've got me so wrong, it's actually scary. I hope you don't find a way to spin all this and try to say "what does this prove?" or say I'm essentially using the "I have a black friend" excuse. But with any luck, I hope it causes you to have some deep introspection.

Now, as for the research points - you have oversimplified these points and put a sinister edge on them to make me look bad. Let me go over what I actually said vs what you claim I said:

1) Some Irish were slaves in America. This is just a fact. You can find it in any mainstream publication that talks about this. This stuff doesn't come from conspiracy sites or the KKK. There is documented evidence and pictures of this.

2) White people were one of many races that practiced slavery is what I actually said. Every race has practiced slavery, it's just that, for some reason, whites get the worst guilt-tripping for it to this day. Every race has done awful things to its own people, never mind others. Slavery still goes on today. Ironically, majority white Western countries make sure it's illegal and put in systems that aim to prevent it but many others don't.

3) That wasn't what I said at all, I said that some black Africans TODAY enslave other black Africans. This ties into what I said above. Worst part is, their governments aren't doing anything to stop it. And don't even get me started on the ritual murders of white farmers and houses/land of white citizens being seized across South Africa and Zimbabwe that liberals never want to address. My issue is whenever it's black people doing bad things, no one wants to address it but white people doing the same things must be stopped. Why can't every bad person be stopped regardless of race?

4) I said that the number of black slaves enslaved in America wasn't that big a number WHEN COMPARED TO the number enslaved in the Arab Slave Trade, yet modern day Arabs are not being being asked to pay reparations or are guilt-tripped in any way because of what happened years ago. It's also worth noting that the Arab Slave Trade was far more brutal (they castrated the men) and went on for much longer than the American Slave Trade. Any slavery is terrible but I was merely pointing out how even more extreme examples of it have been forgotten/not talked about and the races behind them are not taken to task.

5) I never once claimed that conditions of slavery weren't that bad (on the contrary, I even pointed out how indentured servitude was just as bad, if not worse, as the masters worked them to death so they didn't owe them anything when their servitude was up). This point you've made was tied into my last point that I just said about other slave trades being even worse than the American one.

The only thing that's disgustingly offensive here is your dare I say, deliberate misinterpretation of what I originally said (which was probably recounted from memory instead of actually hunting down my original posts so you've failed to remember what I actually said) to make it look far worse than it actually was. There was no right wing framing here, just clear cut facts you can find on Wikipedia. You act as if I found out this stuff on radical hate sites, quite the opposite. I found it on the most un-biased, mainstream sites around. When dealing with stuff this serious, I would never find it out through any politically leaning source, I would hunt down actual historian's accounts.

Thanks for your defence. I also ask that you read my above post to see that my "claims" explored in these points were actually exaggerated to make me look bad and I elaborated on what I actually said.
