Conservatives are more likely to be friends with liberals than vice versa

Roughly 92 percent of conservatives said they would be friends with a liberal, and just 3 percent said that they would not have a liberal friend. Among liberals, however, almost a quarter said they would not have a conservative friend. Would UNC be a better place without conservatives? About 22 percent of liberals said yes. Would it be a better place without liberals? Almost 15 percent of conservatives thought so.

Not to defend liberals too much, but many people see things like racism and xenophobia (correctly I might add) as a fundamental affront to their ability to exist in society, so this stat doesn't surprise me. Comparing that to liberals being pro gun control or pro-choice... as much as conservatives feel very strongly about those issues, I really don't think the average conservative feels their ability to succeed as a citizen in the economy, work force, have social relationships, be safe, etc. is impeded by the potential of pro-choice legislation or gun control or other issues of that nature that are very polarized

Maybe it's a good thing that people take things like fundamental rights over superficial friendships that only involve small talk and hanging out.

If your opinion is "Jews and gays and blacks are bad and I'm entitled to it," then it's a good thing I'm not friends with you.

I think political leanings really influence friendship potential in the U.S, especially when we have a president as bad as Trump.

Now, I have nothing against republicans and will never allow myself to "hate" or "discriminate" against other people because of political views. But I've just noticed that I just end up getting along with people who share similar views and values.

I can see the contrast even among roommates. My previous roommate was a progressive like me, and all it took back then is a couple of weeks to become friends. We'd talk freely about what's going on in the world and it was always pleasant to have a conversation with him.

My current roommate (a republican) that I've been living with for like over 6-7 months, we've not gotten close at all, and maybe it's better that way. We almost never bring up politics and it's like each of us has to keep a poker face on to avoid showing clashing political views. Like whenever there's something political on TV, all you'd hear is radio silence lmao, because we're not trying to offend each other.

So ideally, I'd prefer to be around people who have similar views and values as me. But I don't discriminate or shame others who have different beliefs.

You should not be friends with people who hate Jews, gays, and blacks. But thats not what the majority of conservatives believe! The idea that all conservatives are this way so I cant be friends with them is the problem. Yes racism is a bigger problem with conservatives but thats not who they are. You can find millions of conservatives who are good people everywhere, why not accept them as friends?

i have conservative friends. idk politics isn't that much of an issue for me cause i rarely discuss it irl. even with liberal friends. i never talk politics with them because it just turns into a pointless contest.

I think people today identify as their political party, which is why all this is happening. Even young people today, their whole identity is based on a stupid political party!

You and your friends are very lucky then. Politics is an everyday struggle for many people. It decides whether or not they get to keep their land, drink clean water, get to enter a country, live in said country, marry someone, earn a minimum wage, fight a court case, have shelter, but good, get an education, healthcare or any other basic human need that the majority of us simply take for granted.

When you say “I don’t talk politics”, what you’re really saying is, “the struggle of others in this current political state has zero effect on me.”, therefore meaning you’re privileged enough to exist.

I’m not trying to bash you in anyway. I’m just trying to state why not talking about politics with your friends does more harm than good.

Well yeah if your opinion on politics is "I dont care about anyone else besides myself" aka conservatives then you wouldn't have a problem to hang out with someone that is better than you.

That’s such a general and vague statement. Most people don’t base their identity on a political party; they base it on political values. Major difference.

It’s a win if a certain political party shares the same values as you. (Eg; basic human rights for all)

I think we can widely agree that issues of racism, sexism, and general bigotry are things that the left take a bit more seriously. The right does, but look at the number of people who would say they aren't racist but voted for Trump. To the right that says, "Well, I don't like him, but he did xyz for me." while to the left it says, "You are selfish and condone racism."

The former agrees that racism is bad, but doesn't take it as seriously as the latter which sees it as a line that can never be crossed or condoned. The former would absolutely be able to get on with the latter more than vice versa because they're a bit more flexible. Liberals being more rigid also makes sense when you consider that liberalism typically incorporates the greatest degree of diversity while conservatism tends to skew white.

The Democratic party has no values other than the claim that they are the "better of two evils". And you still vote for it anyways because you identify as a Democrat. And did you seriously describe the Democratic party as Basic Human Rights for all?!

I'm not going to be friends with people who vote for and support laws that could kill me or others regardless of what political party they belong to. Though, they're usually conservative.

Liberals do the exact same thing, you have an unrealistic cartoonish imaginary view of your political party.
