The Trump campaign have been spent at least the past year or so calling the Democrats 'Socialists' in almost every message they send out, so regardless if the nomination is Bernie theyre still going to do it and have been.

The GOP are screaming "socialism" towards any general welfare program like MFA/single payer healthcare, state sponsored education, etc as a scare tactic to turn off voters from voting in their own interests.

agreed, but Bernie is the only one who actually says they're a socialist. All the other democrats do not. I just think Trump screaming socialism is going to scare away A LOT of independent voters in swing states. Especially with controversial reps like AOC and Ilhan Omar backing Bernie. I think the democrats would be a lot safer with Andrew Yang, Amy Klobuchar, or even Pete

This take has consistently been proven to be WRONG. Bernie does the BEST with independents against Trump compared to all other candidates according to polls.

Yeah Bernie would have the upper hand. Trump is the worst debator.

Trump's a terrible debator, but he's got a loyal ass base. What we need is a candidate who has that same kind of enthusiastic voter base. Bernie's that candidate!

I don't think it will matter America doesn't  seem as scared of socialism as they used to be. They need healthcare. People are dying. It doesn't matter how they slander Sanders his policies are what the people want. Which is why I feel he will do a lot better against Trump in the debates than Hillary did. She went on about identity politics and how he was a "bad man". Sanders will be able to combat him on policy and call him out on his corruption.

Bernie needs to simply explain that hes not a communist, he always makes it complicated for people to understand what he stands for. Even I did not understand a couple of years ago.

I don't think Sanders is a communist. I do think Trump and the Republican Party will intentionally obfuscate the distinction between "Democratic Socialism," Socialism, and Communism in order to fear-monger about what a Sanders presidency will look like. I can't say how successful such a smear-ish campaign would be.

That said, Sanders' recent idea to have the government establish new electrical utilities (to compete with investor-owned utilities and develop more renewable electricity generation) does sound like a little more than a half-step towards "seizing the means of production."

(It's also not that good an idea... the Tennessee Valley Authority, which is a federally-owned corporation and the largest public utility in the nation, is a serious laggard when it comes to adding renewables to their electricity portfolio. However Sanders establishes his federal utilities, the next Republican administration will just change its mission.)

That's because there's confusion between "Independent" and "moderate" voters, and the two are used interchangeably when they shouldn't be. To wit, there are plenty of people who don't identify with either party (i.e. are independent) but are not swing voters. Sanders is himself an example of that - he is not a member of the Democratic Party, but nobody questions where on the political spectrum he is.

On the other hand, the more centrist candidates like Biden or Bloomberg would appeal to more moderate voters. I've personally spoken with moderate Republicans who have said they could see themselves voting for one of them, but would otherwise vote for Trump. But the more moderate candidates wouldn't get the far-left voters who identify as independent.

So basically, you and stevana are both right - Sanders gets plenty of Independents, while Biden would be more likely to get actual crossover support from moderate Republican and Independent-identifying voters.

literally how is anyone stupid enough to believe Trump works for and cares about them. Bernie's not my first choice in the Dem primary but it's clear that he cares about working class people.

I like Bernie, but I truly dont think he can beat Trump.... if Bernie gets the nomination, Trump and republicans are going to SCREAM about socialism and how its going to destroy our country.... I don't get how universal healthcare is considered socialism? Especially when Canada, Sweden, etc. have similar systems?

Is healthcare what he was talking about?

Anyway Bernie's proposed taxes on the rich are way higher than any Scandinavian Countries tax so that is quite deep into socialism at least in terms of the redistribution idea
