The good thing is that same-sex platonic friendships in China tend to be very affectionate, so you can show affection to other people of the same sex quite easily without people blinking an eye. The flip side of that is that people won't necessarily connect that with being gay. I had gay friends who could openly show affection toward each other (short of making out) in public, and people assumed they were just good friends.

When I first lived in China, I think people were more close-minded. I used to teach English there, and one of my students came out to me, but he didn't want any of his classmates to know, and his mom still kept trying to set him up with women. He since left China and moved to the Netherlands. I think it's much better now, but it depends on where you are and who you're around. My contacts in China tend to mostly be artists and intellectuals who are very open-minded and accepting, and I have several gay friends living in the mainland who are able to live their lives fairly openly. Still, mainland China is not as advanced in this regard as Hong Kong, and Taiwan (which just legalized marriage equality) is even better – Taiwan's probably the best place in Asia for gay people.

But I'm a straight woman, so I can only go based off what I've seen and off of friends' experiences. I don't have first-hand experience in this regard.

I hope you get to go. The food is excellent, though I don't care much for Shanghainese food (too sweet!) – I love the food in Beijing though, and Hong Kong is one of the best food cities in the world.

Thanks! That sounds comfortable for me then :) Yeah, heard Taiwan was advanced in those terms so that's nice.

I see. More excited now then :) Hope everything gets better. Btw I read on Wikipedia that there is no vaccine/solution for previous conoraviruses.

I remember the swine flu outbreak in Mexico when I was like 6.

We coudn't go out, airports were almost closed, schools were closed, movie theaters  as well, concerts were cancelled...

I hope it doesn't come to that

I got swine flu when the outbreak happened

I survived thanks only to good medical care in the states. Ironically, thanks obama.

Most people don’t have the resources over there. I pray for these people.

There’s a video of a nurse saying the government is lying about the numbers of infected. It’s a very scary situation that you’ll see people talking about 2003 SARS and living thru that too, yes it’s a very similar situation. And the government lied about the initial numbers then as well.

What’s scary to me is initial reports started NYE...

it is a virus, therefore there are no antibiotics capable of destroying it and so far no vaccine has proven to be valid. For now, no cure is effective, it is also changeable...

You don’t use antibiotics for a virus. You use antivirals.

It’s why bacteria are developing more resistance to antibiotics. Don’t take antibiotics when you have the flu. The flu is a virus not a bacteria.

Thanks anyway! :) Yeah, I guess too soon. I will just keep on planning and hope they find a quick cure, or hope things get calmer. Kind of sounds like an exaggeration to me too but since they are locking the city it's seems really serious.
Since around 500 reported cases and there lives 11.080.000 million there.

edit: It's actually 941 reported cases now. ****.

If it becomes a pandemic, you won't be able to travel anyway :ohwell:

Also facts about the infected :

-Mainland China has officially more than 1000 confirmed cases with thousands suspected. (But on Weibo, people are actually talking of 90 000 cases with an highly contagious and already mutated virus. Though the chinese government are deleting the posts so it is hard to know, but on twitter there is a video from a chinese doctor talking about it but it is hard to know if this is true. It would explain the two "built in 10 days hospitals" as well as the 15 cities put on quarantine)

-Other countries are starting to get their own cases :

HongKong: 5 // Thailand: 4 // Taiwan: 3 // France: 3 // US: 3 // Singapour: 3 // Malaysia : 3 // Macao: 2 // South Korea: 2 // Japan: 2 // Vietnam: 2 // Népal: 1 // Australia : 1

With a lot of suspected cases.

As for the virus itself, it seems that even when you are contagious, you are asymptomatic for a few days.

My little cousin got swine flu as well. She was 1 or so at the time.

After that, we got flu shots, she probably got it from us before we took our shots.

Luckily we didn't get sick, and she obviously got treated, but we did miss school (we weren't in the state were schools were closed, but lived really close).

People say the Mexican and US government were exaggerating, but what if Mexico didn't overreact? The government didn't overreact, they simply contained the virus well.

H1N1 killed millions in 1918.

Yellow fever in 1820, Typhus in 1920, and I guess this in 2020 :huntyga:

It's actually, spooky, because SO many people at the end of 2019 were talking about a "plague" happening in 2020 because of all the other incidents happening in the 20's. :triggered:

Coronavirus arrives in Malaysia and Oceania

The new coronavirus reached Malaysia and another continent, Oceania. Three cases of respiratory disease were confirmed on Saturday (25) in the Southeast Asian country, and another in Australia. As a result, 12 countries on 4 continents are already affected by the infection that arose in China and has killed 41 people since the beginning of the year.

According to Malaysian Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad, the three people with the disease are Chinese nationals and are the woman and two grandchildren of a 66-year-old man who was diagnosed with the infection in Singapore.

In Australia, the confirmed case is of a man who arrived in Melbourne, in the southeast of the country, a week ago from the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak in China. According to Australian authorities, he is isolated with pneumonia and his condition is stable.

On Friday (24), the United States confirmed the 2nd case of the disease in the country, and France registered 3, the first in Europe. There are also cases in Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Japan.

In China, where the outbreak began and the only country to record deaths, the number of fatalities rose to 41 on Friday. There are 39 dead in Hubei province alone, 15 of which had confirmed cases on the same day.

In the region, where the city of Wuhan is located, there are a total of 729 infections and 4,711 people under observation. Hubei province had 13 cities with traffic restrictions as of Friday, affecting about 40 million people.
