As the front-runner, Vice President Biden did well in the sense that he had a solid performance which is really all he needed to do. No gaffes. Good answers. I wish he'd been more energetic to really put people's anxieties about his ability to deliver at these debates to rest, though his last few answers and his closing statement were particularly good. He also effectively beat back the (surprisingly very few) attacks that were lobbed at him, for example on Iraq. He came off as experienced in foreign policy in particular but continued to make good points about the cost and feasibility of Medicare For All. Biden came into the debate as the frontrunner, and I don't see that changing because of tonight - he didn't get attacked enough, nor did he say anything embarrassing. But the other candidates gave good performances, too. Nobody was bad; I found myself feeling pride for our party and the choices we have. I thought Warren was particularly good and I might say she "won" the debate - she is super smart and it comes across at pretty much every debate. She is authentic, wonky but accessible, and I think she could possibly recapture some of her lost momentum if people were really tuning in tonight. I can't help but notice that even though Medicare For All was originally Sanders' baby, Warren's usually the one who catches flak for it. Sanders, who is also generally very good at these debates, gave a very good answer on the "feud" that put the issue to rest, though Warren also took advantage of it by pointing out the importance of women candidates and voters in helping Democrats win big in 2018. He did a good job of trying to attack Biden, but he seemed to change his strategy later in the evening. The moderators went after him a bit on M4A, which I thought was new and sort of interesting. Klobuchar and Buttigieg also did fairly well - though Klobuchar looked at her notes a lot - but they always are pretty solid and just aren't making it happen in the polls. I don't see either of them breaking out. Steyer was fine too, but I just don't think he's what the party is looking for. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
