Lilmonzter 2,864
Iran is a nuclear power. Trump has opened up a Pandora's box going after Qassim Soleimeni for political expedience. Wait nd see how this turns out. This is not a two country issue,it's going to affect each and every one of us. Major import of crude oil comes from the middle east. Some economies will be crippled if this escalates. Trump doesn't understand the cost of war not a single person in his family has ever served. But the thing is those memes are almost all western. I'm in the middle east and trust me, nobody's joking about this. It's ****ing disheartening seeing tone deaf americans joking about WWIII when they will never actually be affected themselves since the US is so good at waging its wars on foreign lands. It almost feels like they're mocking us. I’m Middle Eastern as well and everyone on social media is joking about it. Stop with the victimization mentality. imnotyourbabe10 6,120
So glad there is some awareness on this thread about the proliferation of the memes and jokes about this situation and WW3. It is not funny and, while joking can be a good coping mechanism, the memes are largely from privileged folks who won't be affected (as others have said in the thread). Plus, I think we all sincerely hope this would not escalate to a global war. The existential crises the world is facing (from threats of war and/or climate change) should not be so easily tossed around on the internet. Instead we should be voting, taking to the streets and shutting the systems down (if possible). If not, see a therapist and talk through the anxiety that is being masked by the joking. As a counselor in training, I do get concerned about the quality of how people cope via the internet -- not saying it's inherently wrong but I worry that it is not particularly healthy. Leave the jokes to the comedians and the mental health to the professionals.

And this is coming from someone who is American. It's definitely an issue we've got.

The things I consistently hear from other Americans fit all those descriptions accurately, especially around fourth of July. The whole American exceptionalism narrative that's constantly fed and regurgitated to us by the media, government, family, etc. That narrative definitely helps to construct and shape such a mentality. This new generation that think everything is a joke don't actually realise how serious things like this is. They can dig up racist and/or homophobic tweets from celebs, but when it comes to matters which are literally life or death like war, they have no idea just how serious it is End Racism Now

This kind of goes back to being out of touch and entitled though as well. They're unaware and just assume it could never happen to them or their city/country cause it's "Murica" They pick out all the trivial, less serious things then joke around about the real serious stuff since they've never personally had to deal with anything like that and they believe they won't have to. War isn't some fantasy or a trend that people can post a few ticktocks and it will die out. There are zero winners in war. And we should be learning from history, not repeating it. But instead of looking back, they think its so farfetched that it won't effect them. End Racism Now
