Again, angry but not surprised. It's amazing how many people think the US is just 50 states or that being hispanic/lantio automatically makes you a foreigner.

Context for non-Americans: Puerto Rico is a US territory. :poot: It's been in the process of officially becoming a US state since 1953. In 2012 or so, they even voted to say they wanted statehood.

Republicans aren't letting it happen for entirely partisan reasons. Why would they want a million more voting Latinos? :nails: And most likely 2 extra Democrats in the senate.

Imagine living in Puerto Rico. You're impact by national level US Federal law and have no say in the political system or for president. :nails:

The fact that we tolerate a system where anyone could be turned away for medical care/medicine at all is disgusting, but the fact that the most marginalized people here bear the brunt of this sort of cruelty is even worse.

Not to mention there are plenty of Hispanic communities in Texas, Florida, Colorado, etc. that have been here since Spanish colonialism (and pre-“America”). In fact my Spanish teacher loves making the point that the US is a Spanish speaking country- there are more Spanish speakers in America than there are in Spain.

Not really. We basically belong to the US, we are a territory, but a lot of Americans don't know it. When I moved to Florida a year ago a lot of people I met didn't knew it and some even thought that Puerto Rico was part of Mexico or somewhere in South America. I... :madge:

wow i always thought it was an indepedent country. I mean has its own flag, plays as an indipedent team in Olympic games, mundobasket, mundial and etc. and i think 99% of people at least in Europe think that  its a country

i mean even if you look at the map of US ,Puerto RIco isnt included

Every state has its own flag, so that’s really nothing.

PR is a US territory, not a state. Just like US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, North Mariana Islands.

The US actually got PR because Spain gave it to them after they lost the Spanish-American war, by the way!

They usually only include the states on maps. I'm really surprised at how others see it an independent country. It makes me happy but also sad knowing it's never gonna happen. The economy there sucks so without the US there's not a lot of hope.
