What's your cultural background?

This sort of thing varies by culture. We can't apply one standard (as long as they're not like actually having sex). It's like holding hands while walking is a romantic gesture in the US but in many places, friends do it. In some Middle Eastern countries, people kiss strangers as a greeting.

I am dutch

A kiss on the lips is more scandalous than kids abandoning their old parents in retirement homes. What a world we live in. :rip:

Another cultural difference.

My parents wouldn’t want to live with me or my sister. They need their space to maintain a healthy relationship with us and they enjoy their privacy as holistic human beings. I work at retirement/nursing home myself. I would love to live there when I get older.

It is really well organized these days. My client’s (I hate the word patient) have their own apartments with kitchen, separate spacious bedroom and a spacious bathroom. They get to bring all their furniture. The can eat with the other client’s in the public living room or at their apartment. They go on holidays. Etc. No visiting hours. Family and loved ones can stay over if they’d like. All my client’s are in control of their lives.

what are retirement homes like where you are from?

Bad. It’s nothing like the west. Parents here slave their entire lives just to get their kids through expensive schools and colleges and keep supporting them until they have good jobs so they don’t leave any money for themselves.

I know lots of people who support their kids even after they’ve gotten married. They even buy houses for them. And what do they get in return? Neglect and abuse.

In my culture (north africa) and i believe most asian countries, putting your parents in a home is like abandoning them. What we do is that we take care of them until they die. Elderly people are the most respected ones, and it's our duty to take care of them just as they took care of us since birth...
