Bernie Sanders Only Major Candidate to Sit Out LGBTQ Events

The man who presided over a town that became a mecca for trans people before I was even born (https://www.thedailybeast.com/mayor-bernie-sanders-created-an-80s-trans-mecca-in-burlington), was publishing op-eds in publications arguing on behalf of queer people 40 years ago, and who has, by far, the best record of anyone running regarding their support for queer people has absolutely nothing to prove to our community.

Harping on the symbolism of attending one event to baselessly smear a lifelong supporter for the improvement of the material conditions our community endures is just transparent bs.

Not everyone can attend everything in a campaign like this. There will be conflicts. He spent the day touring a HBCU and other historically Black owned businesses. He's good.

He's been supporting LGBTQ rights longer than some of you have been alive

Well... I can’t even blink. He’s clearly pro LGBT. It’s THE OTHERS who need to boast up

Bernie is the ONLY candidate up there (well, I guess Warren as well for this issue) where I have absolutely 100% faith in his position on this topic because of his well documenter unequivocal and moral support for the LGBTQ+ community. This doesnt bother me.

I do think there should be at least 1 more popularized LGBTQ+ focused discussion from the dems though, mostly about how to go forward against Trump's pro "religious freedom" legalized discrimination bs I suppose and how far they are willing to go to make discrimination against gay people in the workforce, adopting, etc. as illegal and punished as it possibly can be. It's an affront on the freedom America purports itself on to be able to blatantly and LEGALLY discriminate against a class of citizens in 2019.

Kinda nonsense when every major presidential campaign in the country decided to attend

There are big moments that everyone knows should takes priority

There was. It was in Iowa today. And he missed it, too. It's in the OP.

Thank you for those going to bat for Bernie in this thread.  He has been consistent and is a good man.  Anecdotally, I've seen him talk live a few times and he certainly brings up LGBTQ in his speeches.

I am kind of glad he sat this pandering, corporatized event out, though.  :huntyga:

I said 1 more. Large, publicized, televised, talked about, etc. The average person isn't watching even the debates,  most people havent made up their mind yet, etc. so reaching as many as possible to me is most important rn.

And like I said,  him being at it is unfortunate, but doesn't really make me flinch. I realistically don't need 45 second soundbits of capsized plans on an issue where, to the best of my knowledge, most of the candidates agree much more on this topic than almost any other issue. While its been upsetting to see there havent been any LGBTQ+ questions asked at the debates so far, I *do*  know the positions of all of these candidates pretty well where they've ever been asked, especially Bernie.

That being said, I would like him to come to the HRC one in October, if for no other reason than to avoid the bad press... its clearly not an issue he doesn't care about or anything. It's more concerning that frontrunner Joe Biden had intentions of skipping the DNC ran Climate Change Debate (that they ended up scrapping and we got a town hall instead - which he did attend) to me, because he doesn't really* support the Green New Deal so there I would have liked to have known his plan.

(Hint, its garbage)

*him Not being at it... it won't let me edit that paragraph*

Bernie haters doing the most. Embarrassing.

Bernie personally attached Hillary for not going to the climate change forum in Nevada in 2016.

This is something you would have criticized Bernie over back in 2016 too lol.

I don’t think it’s “hating” to say he should be there.
