Justin Trudeau Brownface scandal

You guys don’t realize the rest of the world doesn’t have the same relationship with blackface/brown face. That type of racism was darker in US’s history. It’s not right by all means, but we can’t hold it to the same standards against someone who is from Canada, which doesn’t have the same history with racism as the US.

The photo is black and white. Is it really brown face or he is painted blue, like the genie from Alladin movie? Do we have a colored version?

Excuse you?

The way some people here on GGD are so insensitive to the way minorities feel is disgusting.

Can't say it's surprising you quote me with this seeing your posts in the non-binary threads.

A 29 year old man not knowing this is wrong? BIG YIKES.

I don’t think a majority of the population in Canada knows what is brownface/blackface, even less 18 years ago. Even i learned about it a few years ago through scandals in other countries :eww:Still doesn’t mean it’s okay

A serious question, we know that blackface is wrong because of the history behind it. does brown face have the same history? because if not then why is it wrong

Indigenous people from my country, Philippines, are brown skinned. Americans used to ship them for display on human exhibits/circus because they are "exotic".

How old are you? 10? The world was like that at the time. Grow up. Things change. Everyone would risk it like that. It was ignorance.

This! At the time people didn't care about. It's dumb, sure. But it's not that big of a deal. It's in the past and lots of people would do it thinking it was innocent behaviour.

As a Canadian and POC, my support for him doesn't change one bit. He is NOT a racist. This was a stupid thing he did almost 20 years ago and he is proven since then that he respects minorities and is willing to stand up for them.

I'm actually 12.

If you're referring to the character I posted about... he stopped interpreting it in 1970. He did the right thing. Just because the world was like that doesn't mean it was right. Why does it bother you that people think it's wrong? That's the better question.

If he's blue I'm kinda otherwise he needs to repent:fail:

He apologized in a press conference 1 hour after the photos got leaked.

Meanwhile we still waiting on the Conservative’s leader Scheer to apologize about his homophobic comments which he refuses to do.

What a messy election and messy candidates we have, save us :air:

Cause this is political campaign.  It's just sand for your eyes. It's pretty common to bring this thing ups to diminish candidates.

You are right when you say it's wrong (cause it is). But the value of that action is  now lost in time and context.

People need to be careful about this things cause sometimes darker intentions are behind it.

Also... early 2000 was a very different place.  Nowadays that costume would be a  big NO. But at time people would find it funny or tacky. (I hope the later).

While I don't share your views about non-binary you are right on thinking this is wrong. It's disrespectful and uncalled for. But it was a party with a theme and a bad choice of costume with some bad taste from the early 2000's that led to this. People are way more aware about this type of things. My generation was more... blind. Can't find the right word.

But yeah, in politics we call this a "divisive issue" and it's a tactic that it can be used to gain votes or make another candidate go down. It doesn't mean that it isn't important, but they are literally using this in the wrong way and you should (I hope you do) be suspicious about it before jumping in.

So what bothers me is that people blind themselves with this kind of things when someone is pulling strings with very different goals. While they spread this new to entertain the media,  at the same time they try to pass some filthy law.

I'm not Canadian. Politically, this is irrelevant to me. I never mentioned the political implications of this in any of my posts. I strictly commented on the social aspects of it.

Also, you did not quote me about Justin. You quoted me about a Bolivian character form the US. No idea why you're telling me these things.

Hypocrisy jumped out in this thread. If a right leaning politician had done this back in the day, you would have crucified him
