LOVEDRUG 10,405 Posted July 26, 2019 Share Posted July 26, 2019 So, I'm listening to Hard Candy right now and I don't know what to think. Like what was Madonna trying to achieve with this album? Some songs (Heartbeat, Miles Away) are phenomenally good songs and among her best in my opinion, but then you have songs like Give It 2 Me which are in my opinion fairly awful. She jumps from genre to genre super quickly and the album doesn't feel cohesive at all, even if some of the songs are incredible. This album has genuinely really perplexed me. Heartbeat, Miles Away, Shes Not Me, Devil Wouldn't Recognize You, omg jams. Plus Candy Shop has become one of my favorites to see performed live, she clearly loves the song haha Never 100% fell in love with 4minutes or Beat Goes On. Hated Incredible but it has grown on me a lot, I actually love her vocal delivery on it. Hated Spanish Lesson but the tour made me LOVE it. This was a time in Madonnas life when she was really unhappy, trying to keep her marriage together, working out obsessively, and generally having a rough go of it. Unfortunately the album doesnt seem to have a concept except Madonna by Timberland and the art direction was pretty bad indeed. Would have loved a full embrace of the boxing concept. FfFfFfFF 54,863 Posted July 26, 2019 Share Posted July 26, 2019 The problems with this album is more that it's too vanila and lacks flavour (), it's mostly bland, doesn't transmit a message or catches attention unlike her other albums and it's rather her posing as sexy and trying to get the approval of the late 2000s youth. But there are some enjoyable moments (Give It 2 Me and 4 Minutes are lowkey pop perfection), She's Not Me is also enjoyable and Devil Wouldn't Recognize You which is a genuinely great song. You said it jumps from genre to genre but I don't feel like it does, at all. The sound is very cohesive simple R&B/ pop and displays Pharrel's signature sound all throughout. I may love the unreleased from the era: Animal, Across the Sky and Latte more than the actual songs though apart from the ones already mentioned. It prob sounds kind of dated or cheesy now, but when it came out, I literally listened to that songs like five times per day lol But, After the phenomenal album Confessions, and the smash single 4 Minutes, I was super let down by how much filler Hard Candy had. Candy Shop, Give It To Me, 4 Minutes, Heartbeat, and Miles Away were great though. Also, I really loved the aesthetic of the album. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
