Survey Indicates Decline in LGBTQ Acceptance Among Young Americans

"The number of Americans 18 to 34 who are comfortable interacting with LGBTQ people slipped from 53% in 2017 to 45% in 2018 – the only age group to show a decline, according to the annual Accelerating Acceptance report. And that is down from 63% in 2016.

Driving the dilution of acceptance are young women whose overall comfort levels plunged from 64% in 2017 to 52% in 2018, says the survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD.  

“We count on the narrative that young people are more progressive and tolerant,” John Gerzema, CEO of The Harris Poll, told USA TODAY. “These numbers are very alarming and signal a looming social crisis in discrimination.” 

Among the findings:

• 36% of young people said they were uncomfortable learning a family member was LGBTQ, compared with 29% in 2017.

• 34% were uncomfortable learning their doctor was LGBTQ vs. 27% a year earlier.

• 39% were uncomfortable learning their child had a school lesson on LGBTQ history vs. 30% in 2017."

I think it might be the increased awareness of trans people and the media spinning stories of "scary bad bathroom men" that shifted young straight women's perceptions of LGBTQ people away from acceptance.

I really don't understand why people feel uncomfortable around the LGBTQ+ community. They're people. We all are born, feel emotions and we all die. Who cares if somebody is attracted to the same gender, all genders, or if people want to change their own gender? I wouldn't judge somebody for not liking the same ice cream flavour as me, so why should I judge somebody for not being attracted to the same gender as me? I really don't understand this negative attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community.

It's the era where people mistake racist/homophobic feelings/words as "freedom of speech" and "tell it like it is", and are not afraid to show their ugly natures.

Also, parents and religious institutions are still major influencers, more than the Instagram influencers, when it comes to political issues.

I'm really not surprised. And I believe it will get worse before it gets better again, it's a cycle.

Pray that nothing bad happens in our society in the meantime. If anyone needs to take the blame, LGBT people will be the black sheep.

One more thing. (Young) LGBT+ communities are often lumped with stereotypes of "special snowflakes", "liberals", and "we all need safe spaces uwu", as well as overlapping with other trends like body acceptance and black lives matters on social media like Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr. We must take that into account as our online lives are a big part of us.

Not invalidating any of those (safe spaces are important among other things), but those people who view our communities with a bunch of stereotypes will often make fun and disregard of the needs (e.g. "I identify as a helicopter" or "White/All Lives Matter" or "Life isn't full of trigger warnings"). When you got people "joking" about it, it's easier to "joke" along with them and not be critical of your peers' actions.

This is very disheartening. Hopefully it's just a sign of the times.mp3 and the radical thinking that the current US president harbors, and that in the end, when he is out of office things shift back for the better.
