My thoughts on Gaga at MET Gala 2019

This is going to be rather long :trollga: but I just need an avenue to highlight how amazing Gaga’s MET 2019 Moment was :messga: (It's worth the read I hope/promise) She personified the theme “Camp” in a way no other artist would be able to, and in away not many in the general public who are indifferent to her ingenuity would be able to see :firega:

Gaga’s first look is the perfect tribute to the origins of camp. Camp is believed to have originated from Louis XIV. Louis is known as the builder of Versailles. With Versailles, he implemented the most bizarre laws - it was expected of French nobles to live at Versailles; There, they were expected to worship him, in ways such as waiting for him to finish his 28-course meals before eating, and they had to dress him up every morning.

He also performed dances for his courts, which they were forced to watch (just like the way everyone in attendance is expected to watch Gaga run the carpet for 16 minutes - no one asked for it, but she delivered). Gaga perfectly emulates this bizarre history with her dancers. The dancers serve as her “attendants” for the first look. From lifting her ridiculously long train up and down throughout her time in the look, to sheltering her with umbrellas, under a tent, where it is neither sunny nor rainy for an umbrella to be needed. She employs them to serve her in the most unnecessary ways, just like Louis XIV did.

Gaga’s third look in her is a bright pink cocktail dress, as if to mock the celebrities who show up to the MET in cocktail dresses. The whole act with Sarah Tanno and Frederic Aspiras is clearly a satirical piece. Her pantomime of the dumb blonde Hollywood archetype - getting her already perfect hair and make-up touched up, and “calling” Anna to inform her she’ll be late. She's fully living the fantasy of fame. Gaga uses the third look to address Hollywood culture, to allude to famous people who think they are bigger than they actually are. This is especially striking at the MET - a larger-than-life gathering of rich, famous people who come to show off their opulence to the world.

For the last look, Gaga strips it down to a two-piece underwear and fishnets, the perfect ode to her go-go dancing origins. This is so camp because of the fact that at the MET Gala, one of fashion’s biggest celebrations, she chooses to strip down to her underwear and fish nets for her final entrance into the dinner; at a place where you’re expected to dress most extravagantly, she instead chooses to dress as bare as possible

The stripping into each of the looks is also reminiscent of a Barbie doll: “You can brush my hair, undress me anywhere”. She conveys that as a celebrity, she unintentionally becomes a doll or a property of the public. Gaga fully dissolved herself into the spirit of Camp. Her fashion wasn’t the forefront of her entrance, it was her persona, her theatricality, the fantasy that she was living for the whole 16 minutes. In conclusion, Gaga and the Haus absolutely nailed the theme in every way possible, and I am obsessed.

It’s a cute thought, but I don’t think the meanings behind her outfits were that deep.

Well, beauty is to the eye of the beholder. It’s not about Gaga’s intentions, but my interpretations of it. Shakespeare didn’t write his plays to be “deep” either

Considering her dancer said “it has more meaning than people know” I’d say it was that deep.

I don’t deny Gaga embodied Camp. She executed it well.

Where did her dancers say there was a deeper meaning?

And that’s valid. That’s the point of art. You can have your own interpretation of it.

What I was getting at was, she might have had a few references and inspirations, but I don’t think she sat down thinking about Louis XIV for her look.

Ugh I appreciate your thoughts about it. It's not always what she had in mind but how her performance stirs our imagination. That's true art. :applause:

I didn't realize this till now like it's one of those simple little things that seem very interesting. I feel like you could write a whole essay about this. Can we have an Essay tag for GGD?
