Apps like Tinder, Grindr etc make people self conscious because they are judged first on the image they portray online rather than who they are as a person. Therefore, people feel more isolated, and it's easier to retreat and not try to make those connections for fear of outright rejection. I know that rejection has always been a mitigating factor in courtship but online dating has made it possible to be rejected in so many ways that it can get discouraging. I know I have had long periods of time where I've been like "f**k it, I'd rather be alone" after getting discouraged by the competition on Instagram etc. etc. etc. People often feel safer alone - and this is tragic, because you need to be able to open yourself up to pain and rejection in order to find someone who loves you and accepts you.
