When I was in high school (which was Catholic), our mandatory religion class in grade 11 covered major world religions. I'm not sure about public schools, but I liked our approach. I remember learning of different religions in my World History and even World Geography courses in high school. Also, advanced English courses included the Bible as an academic literary source. We definitely were taught and had to do group projects on the core beliefs of Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. But yeah, it was done secularly.
