DiscoHeaven23 35,007
Interesting read form the Washington Post One excerpt: More important, even if Hart had more fully repented, his sins are not DeGeneres’s to forgive. She faced professional danger and personal scorn in her early and courageous trailblazing, but she’s at a place in her life and career where she’s largely protected from the kind of violence Hart described. Hart’s remarks were directed to queer people of color, who are generally much more vulnerable than their white counterparts. A 2017 poll from NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Harvard showed that LGBTQ people of color are twice as likely to have experienced discrimination in hiring and police interactions as white LGBTQ people, and that they are six times as likely to not call the police in a threatening situation so as to avoid reprisal. Really, no single person is qualified to offer the forgiveness of all of queer America. But a white cisgender woman who is widely beloved and obscenely wealthy to boot is particularly ill-suited to try to muster such papal authority. For DeGeneres to think herself licensed to dispense this pass to Hart suggests that the only real indulgence here is her own. REALITY 77,150
Just as people who vilify Hart don't speak for every LGBTQ member out there too. As disgusting and inappropriate as his comments were, as a LGBTQ person of color, I'm not offended by them because those were comments made a decade ago, and they're not representative his character today. hpmcmill 2,009
Kevin Hart is a bad person, but we really need to pick our battles. He’s been held accountable and forced to apologize. What good is a forced apology anyway? Ellen is entitled to her opinion, which I do not see as problematic even if a bit "off." She never said she speaks for all LGBT people. There are places that throw suspected gay men off building rooftops or rape women suspected of being lesbian. This is not something I care to be up in arms about... give him less gigs, etc. sure, but there are bigger fish to fry. We don't have to ignore smaller issues like this one, but - what else can he do? Even if he donated money to an LGBT organization there would still be plenty of naysayers. LOVEDRUG 10,763
The problem is, especially with America, we very easily fall back into racial groups again. I don't think it's time to talk about the 'white LGBT average' or the 'POC LGBT average', in a time where we're more divided than ever I think it's important to discuss the 'LGBT average'. Ellen is just as qualified to talk on this issue as Gaga, Patrick-Harris or any other LGBT celebrity, race doesn't matter, homophobia is homophobia. You're right. But she said that all the people who were upset are trolls and haters. It's not really her place to say that. If some LGBT people are upset it's not up to her to dismiss them just because she happens to be gay as well.

In my opinion the problem is people kicking and screaming about "forgiving him". Nobody is required to forgive him, but people expect some ultimate Christian katharsis fantasy. Everybody would be at peace not forgiving him, but moving on from the situation, but publicized stunts and apologies like this actively keep us from moving on. It's almost like as if your cousin hit you in the face and called you a f*g, but your mom gets upset at YOU for not caring about his apology and then on top schedules a play date with him even though you don't want to see him.
