Why is Nothing Breaks Like A Heart not successful?

I love both Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus, I didn't make this thread to make them look bad, I just want to know what could possibly make a song be commercially unsuccessful when all the factors weighed in seem to be conducive to it reaching great success.

What went wrong? The song is catchy and it features two of the biggest musicians in the industry - Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus, it has a great video. It's the lead comeback single from Miley Cyrus, who came back from a mini hiatus, just as Gaga did with Perfect Illusion.

And both songs feature a collaboration between Mark Ronson and a major female artist.

Mark and Miley also visited numerous radio stations and TV shows to promote this song, even visiting the UK, and did Graham Norton, BBC, Saturday Night Live, all for this one single song, which Gaga did not do for Perfect Illusion (the performance part), and yet Perfect Illusion seems to be more successful?

Perfect Illusion peak on Billboard Hot 100: #15
Nothing Breaks Like A Heart peak on Billboard Hot 100: #67

Nothing Breaks Like A Heart: 27 million views on YouTube, I don't remember Perfect Illusion's views three weeks into its music video's release but it had more I think.

Honestly I thought this song would've been hugely successful when they announced it, I even thought it would threaten Shallow, but Shallow remains... unbothered.

Why do you think this song is not as successful as it seemed to promise? Will the same thing happen to the lead of LG6? Or is Gaga too big an artist to flop nowadays?

It's not that catchy, it's not that good, Miley is a notorious slurrer of words & it's the wrong time of year for a song like this, which sounds like an album filler anyway.

I like the song and I've listened to it quite a bit but it doesn't have smash potential. It's sort of mediocre.

That's because of her dancing with syllables. Miley sounds like she has a mouth full of food.

Seriously I just think they haven't released it at the right time, it sounds more like a Spring hit

Don’t mean to sound mean but Miley’s Bangerz era audience has completely abandoned her. That era felt like a betrayal to all those kids who grew up with Hannah Montana. Now her former fans are doing to Miley what she did to her former fans.

When Hanah Montana first went solo as Miley Cyrus, the gp really didn't give a ****.  She had a couple hits in the US as Miley but the gp didn't really latch on to her.

So she (and/or her label) decided to go this gimmicky Bangerz era route.  She wasn't out there showing her talents or versatility as an artist - she was out there acting like trash a hot mess.  The VMAs, the tongue thing, the trashy try-hard Terry Richardson shoots etc all had the gp's attention.  Seems what she failed to realize is the gp wasn't as interested in her music as much as they were interested in her antics.  Her antics are what drove the gp to buy her music.

She threw away most of the antics for Younger Now wanting to put the music in the forefront and it flopped.  Surprise surprise she's now tryna recapture that Bangerz era with this new album she's creating.

Unfortunately for her, the gp now looks back at her Bangerz gimmicks as a joke... a joke no one finds funny anymore.

Thankfully while the world was watching Gaga's antics during The Fame, she was also showing them her talent and sophistication.  When they grew tired of her antics, it was much easier for Gaga to remain on the map.  She had a backbone and a backup plan.

I actually think the Bangerz audience was more of the GP.

Miley does have fans, but she still relies heavily on the GP to gain success.

I don't think Miley is trying to recreate the Bangerz gimmicks, there's nothing controversial about Nothing Breaks Like A Heart, she actually looks beautiful and looks like a regular pop star doing pop music, in a way that is more appealing.

And I think Gaga's early days were never just made for the sake of controversy, but for theatricality. The Monster Ball Tour and Born This Way Ball Tour were like movies to watch, they were controversial, but at least it looked good and non-comedic. Miley leaned towards offensive and comedic aesthetics.
