It, like many supermarket chains, want to capitalise on the holiday season by making their specially themed Christmas advert, which is a big deal in the UK as it can maximise profits if it connects with the public. Iceland's ad this year was very different from its annual theme, which has always been centered around the celebrity face of the brand throwing a festive party. This year, Iceland went on a very different track and it actually got banned by a regulating authority for being "too political." While Iceland cannot show the ad on tv, they have put it on their YouTube channel to show the public what they wanted them to see. What do you think: There is currently a petition started to bring the ad to tv screens that has amassed over 500k signatures thus far and its been discussed on morning tv. I really hope it comes through because this message is truly what Christmas is about and deserves to be seen. I hope it makes more supermarkets follow suit and it wakes the public up to what they're supporting. We ought to feel very worried that such ads can be banned for such reasons. It can only be concluded as we can't be told the truth. I daresay companies who utilise palm oil are worried that it'll make the public decide to boycott their products at the most lucrative period of the year, so gave the "political" excuse. It's also pretty weak reasoning when there's plenty political ads out there that are allowed for whatever reason. Environmental is not quite the same as political. There is nothing about this that screams “political”. It just highlights the devastation on the environment when making these products. In my messy era. I am seriously beginning to hate our political climate in both the UK and US (I’m of dual nationality). It’s the people banning this or opposing it that will also being saying not long from now “It’s so devastating that we’ve lost so many orangutans”. The only way this would be banned would be if it was endorsed by a political party and Iceland refused to include their affiliation. Extreme examples are when we’re coming up to an election and there will be an announcement before the advert so you are warned about any bias in the following advert. This is actually ridiculous. Clearcast, the authority who banned it, say Greenpeace need to clear it, which is bogus as it's an Iceland ad and they don't need to be endorsed by an environmental group to deliver an environmentally aware message. It's more a case of picking on the little guy because Iceland is just a small chain. A very good point. The stuff we accept and deny is shocking. Society really needs to look at the bigger picture and realise what they're consciously or subconsciously saying. It basically says the EU is banning Indonesian suppliers of palm oil who claim they are sustainable (and on paper they are) but actually linked to deforestation, and leaks showed the UK wants to turn a blind eye.
