Risking HIV over 20 min bare sex is dumb. Sorry, not sorry. We are all educated.

We should not discriminate or feel badly towards HIV positive people at all and should help them. That said, we need to limit growth of this disease, we need to control the epidemic. It's a disease and we can both treat and prevent. It's important. All while trying to rid the stigma.

Also GagaDaily isn't really a queer positive site. It becomes ConservativeGayDaily many times :emma:

The proper term is Serophobia.

(And no I did not just make that up and no it was not just made up in the past 5 years. It's a term that's been around for a long time)

I think everyone knows it's not hard to put a condom on.

I personally believe it's because good condoms that do feel great are highly expensive.

I doubt there's people out there that have tried every condom brand on the market to see what works for them. And then you have to add a partner into the mix.

Prep's effectiveness has always been estimated at around 92%. It merely reduces the risk by 92%. So basically let's say the actual risk is 5%. With PreP it becomes 0.4%. Nice reduction but the risk is still there.

"if I was chatting with someone on a hookup site who wanted to use condoms, it was a deal-breaker for me. I was having sex to enjoy it. And if I was wearing a condom or the other person was wearing a condom, I wouldn’t enjoy it."

This is the terrible culture in the Gay Community. If I was taking PreP, I would still be using condoms most of the time.

The 92% is “typical use” statistics.

PrEP, when taking properly, had never been known to fail before. Of course, it was only a matter of time before HIV developed resistance to it. The real mystery is why it took so long for that to occur.

Y'all are surprisingly HIV negative for such a "queer positive" site. I suggest you educate yourselves more on what Prep actually is and does and how HIV works.

I mean...I think you should be fairly negative about contracting a disease due to misinformation and recklessness on your part. I'm not saying treat poz people like they're lepers (since duh, strides have been made since the late 80s lol), but no you shouldn't be like, "woohoo let's ride the naked cowboy, who cares!" the treatment is still expensive and for the most part, unlike many diseases, this one is incredibly avoidable.

For those freaking out, though, this doesn't spell some wild gay epidemic (for many reasons, but I'll stick with this one for now lol). This has always been the case with PrEP. In this way it's like birth control, you need to take it consistently in order for it to be effective. The drug works by interfering with an enzyme called reverse transcriptase (which HIV cells use to reproduce). Since Truvada interferes with this, it makes it very hard for HIV to make new viruses. The catch is that it needs to be taken consistently because the drug is most effective as it builds up over time. So lapses like this case mention leave you MUCH more vulnerable to contracting the virus and you become more susceptible and your body less prepared (get it?) when it comes into contact with the virus. Even once you start taking it again, it takes a few weeks for the drug to reach full effectiveness. So in this situation, the person taking the drug either ran out and didn't get more or is just plain dumb and didn't listen to his physician's explanation of how the drug works. I wouldn't say that this case means the virus is less resistant to PrEP and the world is crashing down for bareback, just that the drug is not a wonder pill and a partner that is poz is still able to give it to you whilst on PrEP so you should both use a condom AND be on PrEP. To not do that is, not asking for it, but not doing all you can to prevent it either. I'm honestly not sure why the article is trying to sell it on the drug-resistant strain part because from what I'm reading, the most important piece of this is that one partner was not taking the medicine so we can't know how effective truvada may have been had he. It got passed on being drug-resistant, so that's important, but PrEP isn't perfect anyway so wrap it up to increase your odds lol

Yes, living with HIV is fairly manageable now thanks to the great work of many doctors and you can still lead fulfilling lives and have sexual partners and wild torrid affairs, but you cannot be reckless like this fellow and his partner were if you don't want to contract it even if this was a bit of a fluke, one in a million case. And to those who do have it, tell your freakin' partners before sex. Good lord, the number of selfish a******s who are "too ashamed" to say they're poz...I get that there's a stigma, but it's also straight up selfish and immature to behave like that. Discretion is important.

But to those who treat Poz people like they're less, you can hop off also and read a book, or even a brief internet article like:

Double condoms are a no-no. They break easier than just the one.

But I'm saddened by the tolerance news.

I'm  HIV poz myself with untraceable levels of virus, so I cannot infect anyone. But I still only play uncovered with other poz people.

But still, that short period of safety with PrEP was liberating for many people.

Sorry you have to be on the brunt end of people's misinformed beliefs, but thank YOU for being informed about your condition and also respectful of others' bodies. You are good peeps.

HIV is a negative thing so people should be against it

Obviously not what I'm trying to say. HIV is negative like any other diseases, the idea is fighting the stigma around it because it's mostly based on homophobia.

Again, y'all need to educate yourself a but on queer history, virology and the AIDS crisis.

Y'all ready to feel the fear?

According to poz.com, "All of the drugs marketed to treat HIV work by interfering with this [the same] process."

This means a strain of the virus that can defeat Truvada might just be able to defeat the others with less time.

So here's the thing. This is an expected outcome with PrEP use, especially with high-risk encounters. Here's why:

HIV mutates very quickly, and its efficient in doing so as well. Tenofovir, the main drug in Truvada (it's a combo of two), has been in use since the early naughts if i'm not mistaken. Resistance against it has grown over time, meaning HIV resistant strains to Truvada have been around for a long time.

Essentially, what this case represents is a very unfortunate case of bad luck. He probably came into contact with someone who had a Truvada resistant strain of HIV-1.
