HIV begins to form resistency against PrEP

Doctors have diagnosed a San Francisco man on PrEP with HIV.

The case marks only the third documented occasion in the United States in which the widely-prescribed and lauded health regimen to prevent HIV infection has failed. The announcement came at IDWeek, a conference for members of the Infectious Diseases Society for America.

Doctors diagnosed the patient with a rare strain of drug-resistant HIV in 2018. He began the PrEP program–a regimen of a daily dose of anti-HIV drug Truvada, along with regular STD and blood testing at 3-month intervals–in 2016. DNA analysis taken from hair samples demonstrated that the man adhered correctly to the program without missing a dose of the drug. Rather, doctors have linked his infection to an HIV+ sexual partner who had stopped taking his own medication.

The patient’s sexual partner carried a rare drug-resistant strain of the HIV virus, and as his viral load began to increase, he passed it along to his partner on PrEP. The levels of Truvada in the PrEP-taking-partner’s body were not high enough to combat the drug-resistant form of the virus. The case marks the fifth documented case of a man on PrEP acquiring HIV despite adhering to the parameters of the regimen.

Prep's effectiveness has always been estimated at around 92%. It merely reduces the risk by 92%. So basically let's say the actual risk is 5%. With PreP it becomes 0.4%. Nice reduction but the risk is still there.

This is the terrible culture in the Gay Community. If I was taking PreP, I would still be using condoms most of the time.

It's because there is still a stigma attached to HIV, people think it's a death sentence when it isn't with the medicine we now have. Unfortunately there is people on PrEP that think they're invincible and can go out on the weekend, get bred by more than one guy and not catch anything.

We should not discriminate or feel badly towards HIV positive people at all and should help them. That said, we need to limit growth of this disease, we need to control the epidemic. It's a disease and we can both treat and prevent. It's important. All while trying to rid the stigma.

Also GagaDaily isn't really a queer positive site. It becomes ConservativeGayDaily many times

The problem really is, that due to the decreased awareness and people not taking HIV seriously as anymore, people get sloppy and a lot more reckless. Truvada isn't just PrEP, it's also a medication that is used for HIV positive people to surpress the virus. This increasingly sloppy attitude has caused us to deal with a new strain of HIV that is IMMUNE against medication. Sure, we there are multiple HIV medications and alternatives that work, if the virus is able to immunize itself against one medication, it is able to immunize itself against other medications too. That's a serious setback and people should be rightfully concerned.

What we are condemning is this bareback-only culture.

I've struggled with it myself, especially in New York City. Some guys put pressure on me to let them do it without condom. And I'm really proud of the fact that I never risked it. It was crazy how many young good-looking people there were only interested in BB. I almost felt like I was so close to slipping into that unsafe sex world, because I ended up not going through with many guys I was interested in and found it hard to find a match who doesn't mind safe sex.

This is the negative culture we need to fight if we truly cared about the LGBT community. We must keep in mind that safety takes precedence over pleasure. 

This peer-pressure on others to get used to unsafe sex is a terrible fast-spreading problem in the LGBT community.

if you are on antibiotics for a week due to an infection you shouldn't make out with random other people and kiss them etc.

 

you gotta take the antibiotics till they worked their magic and not mingle with others inbetween the therapy
