Mulholland 1,052
WOOOOOWWWWWW so many bad takes saying "Aura" is ARTPOP's most experimental song when it is CLEARLY "Dope"! She invented a whole new vocal style for herself, the production is super-weird for a ballad, the lyrics are both pretty literal and highly abstract. I don't really find anything about "Aura" experimental for her. The production is basically straight-up jacked from the Infected Mushroom song, she'd done the screaming/laughing/ugly voice thing on other songs, and it has one of the biggest, most traditional pop choruses in her catalog. Anyway, I would say: TF - Paparazzi? (This is obviously the least experimental of her albums, but Paparazzi is the only song, really, that perfectly melds bittersweet emotion with pop cleverness) TFM - Bad Romance (Teeth also works, but it's kind of only experimental within her discography. Bad Romance is a legit game-changer and brings together a lot of disparate elements to grand effect.) BTW - Heavy Metal Lover (It's not off-the-wall bonkers, but it is, even 7 years later, super fresh. Had it been released as a single, it would have altered the pop landscape.) ARTPOP - Dope (as already established) Joanne - Diamond Heart (gloriously weird mix of a Bruce Springsteen-esque arena-rocker and EDM pop smash. Songs like Sinner's Prayer or even Million reasons are experimental within her catalog, but actually pretty traditional within the bigger picture of pop music overall.) People are saying Aura specifically *because of* the Infected Mushrooms production. That production is fairly experimental so even though she didn’t build it from scratch, it’s still a Gaga song at the end of the day so we’re looking at it in totality. I also wouldn’t necessarily say Dope is experimental; I think you can find ballads with similar productions. I love the song, btw; it’s my favorite off of ARTPOP, but idk if I’d say it’s so experimental just because you can find its roots in other Rick Rubin productions and other modern rock as well. I do agree with BR, though. I said Teeth, but only because I always feel the need to defend that baby from scrutiny lol industrial synth pop, Bad Romance did that. Tbh even though I like DH I found it to be kind of generic pop rock...Like, it’s pop rock song #1234

It's kind of like a poster track for EDM tropes. I think Dope is much weirder, and her vocals in particular. I know a lot of people don't like that style of singing, but there's a reason a lot of us say "Dope vocals" when talking about some of her post-2013 work. And Teeth is one of the best songs on TFM, and definitely the most underrated. No need to defend a MASTERPIECE! And tbh, I struggled choosing an "experimental" Joanne track. It is certainly an experimental album within her discography, as she's using sounds and techniques she hasn't before, but the album is also her most traditional. DH just feels like a progression of her sound and inspiration. I might go Dancing in Circles cuz it kinda has a lot thrown into it with the spoken word, the Bollywood breakdown, etc. But yeah, Joanne is a hard one to think of in an experimental context. That’s fair. I guess it’s splitting hairs between “experimental” and “complex” which the IM track is so so complex and dense. Like someone else said, there’s a reason no one’s been able to replicate it lol I see your point with Dope. I find it to be incredibly ambitious but I think more in its vulnerability for a pop ballad which I suppose you could say is experimental. I mean, Speehless is great but it’s a pretty standard pop ballad that’s very easily digestible. It does all the tried and true bits very well. Contrast that to Dope which really is not very digestible in a lot of ways to pop music fans I suppose, yeah, I could get on with it being experimental. Thank you! I find DiC to be super super interesting. Lyrically it sounds straight forward about masturbation but on another level it’s about finding happiness and pleasure in being lonely with masturbation being the vessel for conveying that message. Then instrumentally it’s is pretty daring as well. It isn’t trop-house whatsoever and is actually super Middle-Eastern-inspired and even uses sitars and the like. Idk if I want to say experimental, since Joanne really isn’t, but I think if there was a case to be made for one it would be DiC.
