BUtterfield 8 41,838
What is Article 11? It has been dubbed a 'link tax' by critics because it adds a barrier into the free flow of news and information. This will affect publishers and platforms more than individual creators. What is Article 13? Under Article 13, platforms like YouTube will be held directly responsible when someone violates copyright on their platform. This means that any copyright violation that is committed by users is then held as the fault of the company. YouTube will have to clamp the hell down on all copyrighted uploads, or face massive fines. Why do people not like Article 13? Right now you can post a meme'd image on Twitter, but if there is a copyright claim on the original image, that meme will be taken down instantly. Is this the end of the road? The Directive still needs a final vote in the European Parliament in January 2019. However, individual EU countries then get to decide how they want to implement the Directive, meaning different countries may experience different levels of fallout from this. https://www.wetheunicorns.com/news/eu-pass-copyright-law-article-11-13/

Florian 20,017
I do think that Article 11 is a big mistake. EU is trying to give more power to the Press by making Google & Co pay for links but it will eventually be the opposite. Google will pay, yes, but people will still use it and News will grow, Google will pay more and more, and more and more money of the Press will come from Google. Do you think newspaper will be independent and will criticize those companies that will give them 60% of their income (and could decide suddenly to not link their articles when they want to punish them) ?! I don't think so. So at the end of the day Article 11 is bad for everyone in the sense that press will be better paid but at what cost. Article 13 is actually not that bad. Copyright on the Internet is barely respected and this needs to change. I think article 13 is too harsh tho.
