Im watching the 1976 one right now. Apparently it wasn't well likes and Im not really sure why. Im half way through it and it seems pretty decent. Anyway, I think it can be fun it some of us watch the other versions and discuss them as a way to get hyped for October 5th. The 1976 version is on Netflix btw.

I've watched all of them. I don't quite remember everything because it's been quite a few years since I watched them but I remember liking the first one the most and each one after that I liked less and less than the previous.

The 1976/Barbra one is a snooze. The entire middle section of them just sitting around in the desert? Ugh. It's an ugly film, also, shot almost exclusively in browns and beiges. But most egregiously, the music is just straight up awful. The Jackson character's, especially. Like... what the heck is that proto-Slipknot nonsense? And why does he only have one song that he plays half of three times throughout the whole movie? The Esther character's music is admittedly just not my taste in general, but it really makes no sense in the context of the film. Jackson's fans would have HATED that zippy dippy jazz-lite garbage.

The Judy Garland version is incredible. The best performance of her career, and it's a crime she didn't win an Oscar for it. Beautiful film, beautiful performances, beautiful music. And the saddest one of all, considering how Judy's troubled life is clearly mirrored in the film.

It's been like 15 years since I saw the original from the '30s, but I remember liking it and thinking it was very witty and quippy. Thanks, Dorothy Parker!

Yea the Barbra one is definitely very slow moving and cheesy. Im going to watch them in backwards order. Im excited to see the Judy Garland version!

I thought the Judy one was amazing, but the one with Barbra I didn't like that much (except for Evergreen, of course, LOVE that song).

Barbra just didn't seem right for the role of a young musician playing in bars every night. She kinda already played the role of the ingenue trying to make it in showbiz in Funny Girl, and did that perfectly, I love that movie. Maybe if she did ASIB earlier in her career, it would've been better suited. From the trailer and promo I feel Gags will do better in that field.

I really liked the 70s one. I should watch Judy Garland's but its so long. The Born in a Trunk medley is a bop tho.

I thought about binge-watching all of them but I think I'm going to go in without watching all of them, and then binge after. Since I've never seen any of them up to this point, I figured I might as well continue that and not watch them until after I've seen Gaga's! But after I'll for sure watch them all!

The 3 hours goes really fast! (Minus the pan and scan footage section, which is kind of jarring, but what can ya do...)

Katharine Hepburn

1976 - horrible cinematography and unlikable leads but I enjoy most of Barbra's songs and liked the idea of moving into the music industry (they tried!)

1954 - an amazing soundtrack I listen to requently and captivating performances from both leads. Amazing cinematography and chemistry but many scenes are too similar to the original

1937 - cute and charming, fantastic for its time but seems sexist in how the characters act and doesn't have much depth in the handling of alcoholism

I've seen them.  The one with Streisand can be a tad ...whatever lol.  I just dont think she was believable as a rock star personally but it's not bad.

The Judy Garland version is lovely if you can handle the pace. I sometimes love old movies like that tho.  Gone With The Wind, for example.  Pacing is different but if you give it time, it's great.

My grandma wanted to watch the one with Barbra and I told her I would watch it with her because I was curious. Let's just say that it was the most boring 50 minutes of my life before we turned it off. The Jack character was a huge douche and I couldn't stand him. I didn't get any chemistry between the characters and the "cute, romantic" banter felt like they were arguing. I just didn't enjoy it and hope Gaga's is much better, which, basing of critics, it is.

I saw the 1937 one and for me it was boring I stopped at the half.

It's on YT if anyone wants to watch it:
