Lol I wonder how Matthew Libatique is feeling now: both of his films out on the same day, one with universal critical acclaim and one...without.

Some dutch critics are surprisingly (not really) harsh as well. Luckily these are all minor publications and blogs.

That's what I feared the most.

As I told few pages ago, European critics are harsher than US one, and they have a lot of ideologic prejudices: they loathe remakes, they don't like the idea of actors turning directors (unless they end up making a real career out of it, as Clint Eastwood did), and the "everything being made in the past is better than everything being made in the present" old conservative european mood.

The "Cahiers du cinéma" review is very clear: "Bradley Cooper is not James Mason as an actor, and not George Cukor as a director". So what ? lol but for them, it is enough to trash the movie. And the funny thing is, they could have written it weeks before the movie's release, their idea was indeed already stuck in their mind.

(And besides, Bradley maybe has still to learn a couple of things as a director, but for a debut he made a great job, and as an actor, his portrayal of Jackson is sincere, honest and deep.)

Chris is usually very reasonable, he recognizes passion and craft when he sees it. Plus he’s a big ol’ softy. I’d be surprised if he didn’t like it.
