Superhero movies rarely get nominated though, even in the music category. Has Marvel or DC ever gotten a nomination for Original Song before?

You're right, but Black Panther is one of those rare cases of a movie with great success AND great critical acclaim. Also, it has a big cultural relevance, since the cast is composed mainly by black people, which is very rare in the world of super heroes.

That will be a full plate for the Oscars, I think. They have been criticized for the white hegemony in the nominations over the years (#OscarsSoWhite). I bet they'll use Black Panther to try to clear the reputation of the awards. And regardless of that, the movie itself really deserves all recognition, imo.

I hope that doesn't happen. The Oscars have consistently nominated and awarded movies made by black people both in acting and picture categories so I don't get the controversy. 12 Years A Slave, Moonlight recently won. Hidden Figures was nominated, and I'm sure there's more. Some of the recent nominated and winning actors are black, Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Barry Jenkins, Daniel Kaluuya, Maharsha Ali, Lupita Nyong O.

And yes that is indeed rare in superhero franchises but the movie has to be outstanding for it to be nominated. Black Panther is decent, but it's just like another superhero movie except it acknowledges diversity. I did enjoy the film but that doesn't mean I think it's Oscarworthy. Also Wonder Woman was critically acclaimed as well and it acknowledges diversity in that it's directed by and starring a lot of women, but to say that it was Oscarworthy is ridiculous.

Honey, compare that with how many films made by white people with white casts are made and you'll get why there is still a lack of diversity in the film industry.

There needs to be an EQUAL amount of representation and that's just regarding POC.

We still haven't talked about the lack of female directors, cinematographers, mixers etc. and LGBTQ+ representation in films too.
