France bans smartphones from schools

I’m happy too! It was such a better time. You had to interact and you didn’t have this like overly positive and glossy social media profile. No wonder kids are so depressed all the time. They look online and see everyone having a million friends and taking so many awesomely fake selfies. You didn’t know everything about everyone. Lives weren’t fictitious. If I walked to my friends house and knocked on the door and she wasnt home then I would be fine and go find something else to do. Now kids can see that same friend on snapchat with a bunch of other people and get depressed that they werent invited. 

I remember having no internet and no computer. When we bought our first home computer I was shook, but like you couldn’t even do anything on it anyway except play those Jumpstart games and Duke Newcomb  

When you missed an episode of a TV show, then you f*cking MISSED it and oh the suffering while you waited 2 years for it to show up again in syndication and hope that you could find someone in real life to tell you what you missed. 

Also there was literally nothing to do except go outside and play with the neighborhood kids and your friends. We would have full neighborhood games of relevio into the dark hours. 

I am obsessed with my cellphone, but they are socially poisonous in a lot of ways. I see families sit down to dinner where everyones face is in their phones. One day the people that are next to you, your family, your friends, wont be there. How sad to think of all the things that your could have said to one another but your nose was too busy being stuck in a phone obsessively looking at other peoples lives and crafting your false social media identity.

Same, didn't go to a private school but my catholic high school forbid cell phones. In my final year of high school, they changed the rules and we were allowed to use our phones in the hallways, during breaks and lunch

Oh yeah, I used to play solitaire on my Nana’s computer all the time. And paint was like...like...SHOOKETH to the core. 

My first phone was like a flop ass flip phone that each text cost a dollar. 

It really wasn’t so long ago. My sister is 6 years younger than me and had a completely different experience growing up. The notion of “play” is completely different. 

When I was in Venice, I talked to a really lovely local old man about the city and he told me that it used to be a much more beautiful place. I asked him why it had been more beautiful, and he told me because you “used to hear children playing. When you can’t hear the sounds of children playing and growing up, then a city or a place is dead.”

It is great that Canada tries to incorporate the use of cell phones into their curriculum as cell phone use during class time is inevitable, but I see no problem with what France is doing. Cell phones, though they can be beneficial in some instances, are a distraction. 

It’s the classic problem of failing to adapt with the times. A truly progressive society would adapt with new technology and find ways to make it benefit our daily lives. Like literally every app developer ever.

For example, traditional media constantly delegitimizes social media influencers, but all they get in return is increasingly lost relevance to internet sources. The smart companies adapt bc that’s where the youthful audience clearly wants to be. 

Any sort of backwards backlash like this is a regression, and will cause more harm than an optimal compromise. Canada’s actions are not “great”, they’re expected.

I'm on the fence  On one hand I think it's better without them because it can be distracting and even if it's in your pocket/bag it can be tempting to take it out and use it, and also because there's the risk of theft and then drama that unfolds from there. On the other hand I don't think it's harmful to allow them to be used outside of lessons, like during break/lunch time it's not causing any harm. I remember guys playing games on their phones and Nintendo DS systems during our break and lunchtimes and it was pretty cool because we had like groups doing that bonding over it

Not everyone wants to do it but in school you kinda don’t have a choice. Like when you’re assigned group projects and you have to talk to your group members. Cellphones aren’t needed in school point black period. They are important in case of emergencies, but schools also have phone numbers for that purpose. You sound like you’re pushing an introversion campaign. Only simple minded people care about the social hierarchy in school. Not everyone is dying to fit in.

Oh right, I forgot about that  

I can still see me now, 17 years old, bright eyed, getting my acceptance email when Facebook confirmed that I was in college. My friend Lauren and I setting it up and being like “This is the stupidest thing in the whole world. Its so ugly. It makes no sense. No one is gonna use this! MySpace is better...”

I still miss MySpace. You could attach music to your profile and I still think thats dope.

OR integrate technology into the school. I know many schools starting to use iPads (designated from the school) that are locked from social media sites. I don’t think they are regressing in terms of technology.

As a teacher myself I am on the fence. On the One hand, I Think you can use smartphones effectively in Class like having the students look up vocabulary, Conducting research or playing Games like kahoot, although you might run the Risk of your students abusing the fact that they are allowed to use them. On the other hand, they are a distraction and lead to the students only caring about their Social Media when they should be playing attention and participating. Even during the breaks teenagers don't Talk anymore and spend most of their Time on snapchat or whatever App is popular with Young People nowadays. So communication kind of gets lost.

So I can understand both sides but I Think it should be up to the schools and the teachers to decide how they want to tackle the Problem.
