Experts also predicted Million Reasons and Joanne to snatch the Grammys and we all know how that went. :gaycat:

They predicted a nomination. Only a few predicted a win but it was unlikely with Ed Sheeran in the same category.

But yeah we must not take a prediction that seriously. Remember TIHTY? :selena:

I agree that the best actress nomination is a long shot. It doesn't seem to be an Oscar worthy type of role tbh. I think the biggest chance they have to win something is with the Soundtrack, and then maybe Bradley as a director. Although I would be more than pleased if the movie just gets a few big nominations because that's such an achievement still and non-winners aren't really losers at the Oscars.

Why do people keep saying this? Two actresses who played the same role did get nominated. The role is Oscar worthy, the performance might not be.

I think that's exactly why people don't think it's an Oscar-worthy role: because it's a remake. Typically, 'Oscar roles' are original ones.

I know remakes usually aren't anyone's cup of tea (especially not the Academy's), but what I'm talking about has nothing to do with the film being a remake. I'm talking about the role on its own. I've seen a couple users singling out Gaga's role specifically and saying it isn't "Oscar worthy". If you think about it, her role could easily be interpreted as pure Oscar bait.

+ If the film is good, as it seems to be judging by everyone's reactions, no one's going to care about the fact it's a remake.

Given how the nomination process works, if they do a good enough job getting noticed and people (academy members) interested in watching the movie then it very well could get more nominations! Since actors nominate actors, if Gaga gets good word of mouth that could spur people to give her performance a watch and at the very least get nominated. I think it’s way too early to say that, but there is a way of it happening.

This was how c2c wound up getting a Grammy I think. Remember the obvious Twitter campaign from all celebrities?

Sis Barbra Streisand didn't earn an Oscar nomination for best actress with this movie  she was only nominated for best song (and won). And you can't really compare today's Hollywood to the 50s/70s. The market is a lot more saturated now. There's a lot more movies being taken into consideration. I would love for her to be nominated but we'll just have to wait for the movie to come out and see

I know she didn't, but Janet Gaynor and Judy Garland did. Barbra wasn't nominated because the 1976 version was critically panned, that's why it got nominated only in  technical categories.

I'm not comparing the way Hollywood functioned then vs. now, nor am I saying Gaga's going to be nominated, all I'm saying is that the role itself could be an Oscar vehicle for an actress if done right.

I think Bradley and Gaga's version of ASIB stands a good chance tbh. It's already getting Oscar buzz even before it's released. If the movie turns out to be a success, the Academy will surely pay attention to it and possibly nominate it.

Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Stresiand were all Oscars nominees for their respective performances of the same role. Jane and Judy were nominated for acting, Barbra won for song writing. Her performance may not be Oscar worthy, but the role has proven to be Oscar worthy since the 1930's. She would be the first actress to portray the role to not receive a nomination.

Best Actor (Bradley is not included in their predictions)

They're predicting Black Panther to be the frontrunner of almost all categories, which could be inaccurate since Wonder Woman was also predicted to get nominations when it was not. Superhero movies are rarely nominated, unless the Oscars makes a really rare exception, Black Panther should not be nominated.

Addition: A Star Is Born - 38th place (IMDB prediction)

Now can we please get the trailer

Tbh, they might nominate Black Panther due to its cultural sensitivities and also a way to catch attention. They won't nominate anything female centric since they are still rather masochistic but Black Panther is enough of a phenomenon that it will give the Oscars a renewed rep after the Oscars so white and Oscars so male controversies if they were to be nominated. First comicbook movie to get an Oscar nod? First mostly black cast movie to get an Oscar nod? It will certainly give Oscars the boost in ratings and reputation.

Black people have always been nominated though. It's not the 'first movie with black cast' to be nominated. Get Out, Fences, Moonlight, Creed, 12 Years A Slave are just some of the examples of movies with black cast which got nominated. Moonlight and 12 Years A Slave even won the Best Picture Oscar. Tons of black actors also get nominated. They don't need to nominate Black Panther just to represent diversity. They've always been doing it already.

Also it's not about race, it's about superheroes. That's the basis I thought it would not get a nomination. Too rarely does a superhero movie get nominated.
