gts14 1,577
! Before you read this, this is just a thought I had and I don't want to cause any hate or say that Gaga copied Madonna in any way ! I was listening to Madonna's discography and noticed that her and Gaga have many similar aspects in terms of music, album themes and success. 1) Madonna vs. The Fame - - Both iconic debut albums who launched two of the biggest artists ever into the spotlight. - Both have 4-5 successful singles that are considered to be iconic: Madonna: Borderline, Everybody, Lucky Star, Burning Up and Holiday Gaga: Just Dance, Poker Face, Paparazzi, LoveGame 2) Like a Virgin vs. The Fame Monster - - Both albums inculde the (ore one of) the artist's signature hits, Like a Virgin and Bad Romance and both had insanely huge success. Both Madonna and Gaga were everywhere when they released this albums. - Each of this albums had 3 massive hits and 1 flop single: Like a Virgin - Material Girl - Into The Groove - Angel Bad Romance - Telephone - Alejandro - Dance In The Dark 3) I left True Blue out of this theory because this next point makes a lot more sense with Like a Prayer Like a Prayer vs. Born This Way - - Express Yourself and Born This Way - Critical acclaim - 3 hits and flops Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Oh Father, Dear Jessie, Keep It Together Born This Way, The Edge Of Glory, You & I, Judas, Marry The Night 4) Erotica vs. ARTPOP - - Hated by critics - Many fans unstanned - over sexual eras (not that much for ARTPOP but still) - hurt their image - 1 hit and 1 moderate hit: Erotica, Deeper And Deeper Applause, Do What U Want - Everyone thought they were over after this album 5) Bedtime Stories - Joanne - - Torn down eras - used to regain GP's love after previous era - Love by critics - both include signature ballads: Take a Bow and Million Reasons Now I want Gaga to have her Ray Of Light
tomsches 17,385
yeah, you can't just compare two career paths side to side, but then leave out album cycles and invent singles.

I didn't invent singles and I just left True Blue because it made more sense. I'm not trying to prove a point or anything, I just made this so I could avoid studying

Madonna's greatest hits album has outsold Gaga's entire discography. Just don't. Anyway, back to the topic: I disagree with Erotica being hated by critics - as an album, it was much better received than ARTPOP. Also, I find Joanne to be more similar to Music (musically) than to BS, although I can see your point. Still, BS had 2-3 hits (depending on how you look at Human Nature). That J 12,166
Angel and Keep It Together were big in the States. Just sayin. Lol. The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw
That J 12,166
I've always felt like there should be an album in between BTW and ARTPOP or ARTPOP and Joanne. I guess that would be the "True Blue". I'm pointing the song Madonna claims Gaga literally copied, sold much less than Born This Way, and this is an official information from RIAA.
That J 12,166
Express Yourself was last certified sometime in 1989 where it had gone gold at that time. But who's counting. Neither here nor there per se....just sayin lol. The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw

Born This Way sold more than Billie Jean and Beat It, so what's your point? Comparing 80s singles sales with early 10s? Are you for real now?

Express Yourself could not even peak at #1. And MJ is MJ, Billie Jean reached number 1 because he was the KING and Madonna isn't even half of what he was. darkwolf 590
I think this comparison only works for the 2 first albums: True blue was Madge's best selling album, and between like a prayer and erotica she had quite a few number ones and top ten hits: Vogue, Justify my love, Rescue me, this used to be my playground...etc
Snow 1,582
This just doesn't work for the most part, sorry.... and it isnt accurate. You are leaving out the pretty vast difference in success. 👀
