ARTPOP should not be Gaga's 3rd full album

ARTPOP was mis-marketed imo. Had she sold it as what it was, a RuPaul evoking campy-cheap flaming gay pop album then it would've been held to its appropriate standard. It was conceptually knotted and kind of a mess tracklisting wise, but overall not the tragedy it was painted to be as far as the actual top 40 potential of the music is concerned. Theres no reason songs like G.U.Y. or Sexxx Dreams shouldn't have hit in an era where Dark Horse and Timber were topping the charts. She was plagued with poor public perception, bad management, and honestly I didn't agree with a lot of her creative direction for the era beyond the initial looks for the promotional campaign. In summary, the album itself was too silly and dumb to live up to the conceptual ideals she was hawking and thus it was panned. In an era where she would've finally been allowed to go high concept, high fashion, and focused. She went the opposite direction. And it was a miss.

She fought so hard but her management said “NO, DO IT DIFFERENT” to her like 15 times before they finally “approved” the final cut. They basically made her butcher her own album. I think that is why the album cover is all chopped up, and also why she spoke of the concept of ARTPOP as “the decay of the pop star”.

2013 was the last year when pop was exciting. It was the year pop died.

A lot of artists go through a 4th album slump: Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, Katy etc all had floppy 4th albums.

She could always revisit the concept. Some artists release a part II of an older album waaaaay later into their career (this is seen moreso in rappers though).

Her team was just a mess. She had songs that needed fleshed out visuals (Venus, DWUW, SD, Gypsy, ARTPOP, Aura, etc) but she just didn’t have the support.

And BTW was controversial enough, and she was already away from the public eye for sooo long, not even touring in the US for BTWBall (which caused more damage since it didn’t keep her name out there).

i feel like she's not mature enough as an artist/or a great team behind her to execute it greatly.

Imo her team was way better back then than now (before they split of course), she had better promo team and worked with big names for her music videos. The era was very promising before the management mess

Most of the ARTPOP we got wasn’t even the original theme. I really wonder if Gaga released the originally intended tracks that things would’ve turned out better.

It was confirmed Burqa was leaked by Gaga herself, which was an amazing version compared to the watered down Aura we got. I wonder what else we missed out on?

its interesting even in the manicure demos, she does that silly dubsteppy breakdown, cringey as it was, theres lyrical content about her being "pops wife" and "expensive **** diamond rings" it was at least an effort to kind of sneak in her concept in the smallest of ways, but by then i think the album was pretty tarnished by her label. She use to talk about the telephone continuation being on the album, that was SO gonna be burqa, as the lead single and same music video treatment. its so obvious, and i remember when it leaked i mustve replayed it like 30 times. it would've been controversial, but still so catchy and mind-blowing different it would've garnered momentum regardless. I do agree with many others, if it had come out the november prior, it would've sounded a lot more fresh. but by then. daft punk had already made a comeback that spring, so fashion! is gonna sound like a trend follower to that, and then with drakes "hold on were going home" ushering in dance r&b, i remember mistaking do what u want as that song. it just seemed to follow some of the current trends, while acknowledging older trends that where already long gone, like donatella, its fun, but its reeks of the early 2010's.

I think that Joanne would have been a perfect follow-up to Born This Way instead of ARTPOP.  I think it would have been the perfect time to release a more "stripped down" album, especially since Born This Way is a borderline rock opera album that was made for the fans. Born This Way is her most theatrical era, in my opinion.  It would have been a nice contrast for the next era to be more stripped down (and I think that the general audience WANTED that in 2012-2013). Then again, Joanne might not have turned out the same way if she had made it before ARTPOP ... Maybe Million Reasons wouldn't have existed altogether.  Who knows!

As much as I enjoy ARTPOP (the album as a whole), it's easy to tell that Gaga's original concept and ideas were compromised.  I still say that the first four tracks of the album give off a ridiculously fun and trippy "sex goddess from outer space" theme ... But then that tone/theme very much gets lost as the album goes on.   The whole era was just messy ... For countless reasons.

That said, the ARTPOP album itself ... Despite all of the drama and messiness behind the scenes ... Despite the missed opportunity of a good concept album ... ARTPOP is still an overall very enjoyable collection of songs that I still listen to on a regular basis.  Gaga still produced some of her best bops ever despite being creatively compromised.
