Why disappointment happens

Why we are often disappointed in a song or video when it's released?  It's the same reason "the book is better than the movie", or why stories heard on radio or audio books are so vivid.  The human mind invokes images that are more vivid than those seen with our eyes.  For example, when reading a horror story, we each picture the creature or setting that would scare us personally the most.  It's individual.  The image in a movie can't match our own personal thoughts of what would be the scariest image possible.

Before a song or video is released, we each already imagine what we would expect based on our personal likes, experiences, and thoughts.  We know the title, and some hints about the theme, but the rest we fill in with our minds.  The reality can't live up to our vision of perfection.  For some of us, the song or video may live up to or exceed our expectations.  But what about everyone else, who's expectations and visions are based on different tastes derived from their own experiences throughout their entire lives.

That's not only a problem for us, who set ourselves up for disappointment, but for Gaga who can't please everybody even though she very much wants to.  Can we avoid preconceived notions of what a song or video will sound or look like?  Can we just wait and be happy with what we get?  Maybe that's against human nature.

This topic is the result of the possibility that Frankensteined may actually exist, and the high expectations people have for it.  I'm thinking oh-boy, a lot of people may be disappointed because their expectations are so high.

i agree so much with how people imagine everything before they even experience it.

For example, if i get invited to a party my brain instantly creates an environment even tho i don't want to, its impossible not to, cause you're waiting for the party, you think about the party, what you're gonna do, etc. And when you get to the place, its completely different to what you imagined, so you have to adjust to what you've got.

If another party happens to be thrown at the same place, i will already know what it will be, so less expectations and less anxiety :tony:

EDIT: And if you relate it to Perfect Illusion for example, i was not feeling it at first, i decided that i was not gonna get sad because it was different, so i changed my expectations for Joanne, and it was more easy to enjoy

Art comes with the critics. It's normal. We as human beings cannot agree on every single thing everytime. Based on our life experience, we like certain things and other we don't, or we don't understand them. For example, I know Björk is an amazing artist but I'm not a fan of her music most of the times. It's just not my type of music.

Even the best masterpieces ever have their detractors.

OT: yeah, I remember having this conversation with my friends back in middle school when Twilight was a thing, and literally everybody was saying how the books were better than the movies, just like Harry Potter, etc. because we expect way too much from the creators.

All so true. Also when you really love a particular artist, you are able to be more susceptible with their work, like you have a wider understanding of them and just want to follow their journey. It's high admiration and respect.:applause::tea:

She doesn't disappoint me.  But others often express disappointment.
