Chief editor of "Gay Times" suspended for anti-semitic tweets

Decades of white-run, white-owned, monocultural LGBT magazines came to an end last month. Gay Times, Britain’s oldest gay title, made an announcement: Its new editor would be Josh Rivers, who, as a mixed-race British-American, is the UK’s first BAME editor of a gay men’s magazine.

The news was greeted ecstatically, not least because Gay Times, founded in 1984, attributed the appointment to a desire to “best serve the magazine’s diverse and culturally inquisitive audience.” Rivers, 31, promised “a monthly journal that speaks to the vast and varied lived experiences of our community ­– in its entirety.”

But while researching Rivers – previously the magazine's marketing manager – following an invitation to interview him, BuzzFeed News found several dozen tweets between 2010 and 2015 that would shock many people.

There were tweets about Jewish people: “I wonder if they cast that guy as ‘The Jew’ because of that ****ing ridiculously larger honker of a nose. It must be prosthetic. Must be.” In another tweet, he applauded as “genius” a quote from animated sitcom Family Guy: “Jews are gross. It’s the only religion with ‘ew’ in it.” In a third, he asked for film recommendations – except ones about the Holocaust.

Hours after BuzzFeed News published its story on Rivers' tweets, Gay Times said he had been suspended pending an investigation.

"Josh Rivers' past tweets do not align with the values of Gay Times, or any of our employees, in any capacity," a statement posted on Twitter said.

"Josh has been suspended with immediate affect while we investigate the facts. Appropriate action will be taken in due course."

Along with tweeting anti-semtic things, he also has made derogatory remarks about transgender people, Asian people, Middle Eastern people, disabled people and women altogether.

The remarks in question were made in the time frame between 2010-2015 (shortly before he was hired by The Gay Times).

Let this be a lesson: If you do clownery, the clown comes back to bite.

I'd say POC represenation within the LGBT media landscape that is primarily run by white males is actually one of more important concerns we face as LGBT people in the 21st century of the western world since our society has become SO dependant on pictures & visual impulses. It probably only looks "niche" if you look at it from the eyes of somebody who is not affected by any of this.

But that's also not really what this news story is about really, the first few sentences are rather tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic.
