This is a completely baffling move on the part of the Spanish government. By all accounts, if they'd let the referendum go ahead, the 'no' vote would have won. Instead, they decide to unjustifiably subject civilians to police brutality and as such this now has the potential to become very nasty indeed.

The voting is illegal but did this really have to be the response? Just shows the Spanish government's true fear. 

They probably just pushed "No" people to "Yes"

It's kind of an odd law though. Referendums are only ways to gauge public opinion and aren't legally binding... making a law that basically says "you can't gauge public opinion without our permission" seems like something a dictatorship would do

Well they preceded Trump with the Franco regime and they're the ones with a history of conquering a continent and a half.

Will the EU do anything? It's not in their interest to have Catalan succeed in becoming independent and not being in the EU but surely a government attacking innocent people and rescue services deserves at least condemnation  It's why we have Article 7.

Ive never in my life experienced something like this, right were I live. Its scary to live from the first hand how your rights are being suspended and seeing all my friends being kicked and punched truly breaks my heart.

I'm not spanish anymore. Even if we never get to be independent, i'm not calling myself spanish ever again, im disgusted

It's a real catch 22, it deserves condemnation since the EU exists to protect it's citizens but if you condemn Spain, you piss them off. Don't condemn it and it looks bad to all of the other citizens across the EU and of course those in Catalan.
