I can see where you're coming from with this since initially an analysis of that part of her book was posted on a right-wing site, but how on earth is that at all related to GGD's dislike of her? It's not like this is a conservative site.

She is as hardworking and trailblazing as Gaga. See, I love everything that Lena has done, but I can't get over how she wrote about abusing her sister . . . it's the one thing that makes me uncomfortable with her

I've never actually watched the show, but from what I heard from those who have watched it, as well as articles written about problematic episodes, it all amounts to a show that displays women in unfulfilling sex lives. They're being pressured into doing it, not getting enjoyment from it, being weirded out by their other half's tastes, just not having good experiences in general. Lena says it's meant to be a realistic depiction of the lives of 20 somethings in modern society but she rarely puts in a positive experience to counteract it all. And if this is what 20 somethings go through, well...something not right. And I'd rather not see such negativity portrayed as normal on a show watched by so many young people. A writer from The Independent said of the show: "What’s there to celebrate for feminism when a show depicts four entirely self-interested young women and a lead character having the most depressing, disempowered sexual relationships imaginable?" OMG, you just described why this show is SO GOOD. I have so many female friends who were unbelievably relieved because finally they saw a representation in media, how it was really like to be a woman, how awkward sex could be and what irritating experiences you make - that it was not always so super sexy like in all other tv shows, where sex was always "oh so incredible". I don't get this critic at all. And about the four women being self centered - well no one is forced to watch it? I love characters who are incredibly flawed, cause it makes me feel like my own flaws are OK..? This might be a matter of taste, so I can see how this can be a turnoff. About Lena sending "awful messages about sex through Girls", I strongly disagree and actually would state the exact opposite. But everyone has his/her own opinions and that's fine. https://www.last.fm/user/derOlliM
Pearly 1,008
When she was seven she was touching her *1 YEAR OLD SISTER* i really don't see how is this just normal experimentation done between two kids, i get it if two 7 year olds get curious about each other but honestly a 7 year old touching a one year old like that sounds abusive. and then she goes on talking about what type of feelings she had for her and how she lured her into kissing her and wanted her little sister to feel dependent on her by delivering bad news to her, and giving her candy in exchange of doing sexual things with her. this really goes beyond the idea of wholesome experimentation between kids, not sure if a 7 year old taking advantage of a one year old can be considered sexual molestation but this situation is nothing less than creepy 𐦬✝▽𝚼𝙹〰∀

About Lena sending "awful messages about sex through Girls", I strongly disagree and actually would state the exact opposite. But everyone has his/her own opinions and that's fine. True, some women did say they liked the realistic interpretations. But a small group of women don't speak for every woman. I know that I'm in the minority here but when it comes to sex scenes (simulated, that is, I don't watch p*rn), I actually prefer to see attractive people doing it. I also want to see enjoyable sexual encounters without anything gross, cringey or depressing. That's not hot. And I know that the point of these scenes wasn't to be alluring but in that case, do we need to see it all, in all its depressing glory? Girls inspired a whole host of similar shows due to its success and after hearing about the ones inspired by it showing on British tv now, it just makes me go "ugh." Why do women not strive to be beautiful in these shows anymore? Why is there no urge for self-improvement? Just because you're "normal" doesn't mean you have to be ugly. Plenty of normal girls are prettier than most celebrities I've seen, even without make-up. Women like Lena Dunham make up shows involving unattractive people having sex to pacify their own insecurities about themselves, like "everyone else is hotter than me, so I'm going to make a show where I look plain and act disgusting in the hope this becomes the norm!" I really don't like being told over and over that normal women aren't pretty and don't have sex like in the movies. A lot of people do, actually and the sad part is, they can't be confident in their looks or sexual abilities because they'll get called out as being stuck-up, self-obsessed bitches. But isn't having confidence in yourself supposed to be empowering and feminist? As a feminist, I want to see my fellow women happy, not depressed. Showing women at their lowest as part of a feminist depiction because it's "realistic" (apparently) is not part of my thinking. I know my views differ from the average feminist but I want women to be complex, not to have hive minds and follow their own beliefs instead of ones that they think they're supposed to follow. Here was the full article from the critic I referenced. This is back when the series just started out. It sums up my views exactly: http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/girls-is-not-diverse-not-feminist-and-not-empowering-8224704.html And here was another one talking about the sexist, derogatory language aimed at women in the series: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/mar/21/rabidly-sexist-lena-dunham-language-rules-feminists
nswain1110 3,084
You guys are awful sometimes, you know that? Lena wrote a beautiful post about Gaga. Gaga recognized that and politely replied. She's not ruining her fuc***g career by being polite to a kind woman. She's offering support and love to a fellow artist. The fact that many of you see this as shameful is testament to how toxic you guys are. How about growing up and learning what's important in life? Have you learned nothing from Gaga?
