Brazil legalises ‘gay cure’ therapy, saying homosexuality is a ‘disease’

Brazil took a step backwards with regards to LGBT rights today, after re-legalising ‘gay cure’ therapy following a judge’s belief that being gay is a disease.

A judge in Brazil has overturned a 18-year-ban on conversion therapy, sparking controversy across the country.

Judge Waldemar de Carvalho issued an injunction in favor of evangelical psychologist Rozangela Justino, one that negates a Federal Council of Psychology decision forbidding licensed therapists from trying to “cure” homosexuals.

Brazil’s record on LGBT rights is complicated: While marriage equality arrived in 2013, more than 40% of all anti-LGBT violence in the world occurs there. (On average one gay or trans person is murdereed every day.) The country has also seen a rise in evangelicalism that permeates politics—right-wing lawmakers routinely making crass, homophobic statements.

This girl anitta drags Brazil (I think she is the IT girl there)

I’m feeling a bit sad for them though. Imagine what they have to go through… I’m so sorry that stupidity is an incurable disease. Hey everyone who is suffering from this disease, I suggest you go f*ck yourself. :fthis:

Again, I’m really sorry for y’all. :hor:

For everyone who thinks otherwise, yes Brazil is actually very homophobic. Brazilians gays are often the most exuberant, and there's a great "cult" for queer culture, but there is a looooot of homophobia outside the LGBT circle.

I'm so heartbroken for Brazil. I hear stories from my Brazillian friends about how tough it is for LGBTQ already and this is even worse. I really hope some sort of change happens in Brazil & other Latin American countries soon because this is just ridiculous that people still have this mindset.

I'll never forget news about a transsexual being beaten to death in Brazil around March this year
