USA TODAY A Gainesville, Fla., police officer who just a day ago was a viral sensation as one of the Internet's "hot cops" has now been suspended after alleged anti-Semitic Facebook posts surfaced online. The Gainesville Police Department said Officer Michael Hamill's suspension with pay comes after "several citizens" brought complaints against him. In a statement, the department didn't specify the nature of the complaints, but said the department "takes these allegations very seriously." The suspension comes as the Gainesville Sun revealed two anti-Semitic remarks allegedly posted on Hamill's personal Facebook page in 2011 and 2013. Screenshots of the posts were sent to the Sun, the newspaper said. In the 2011 post, Hamill gripes about how people must "stop taking advantage of our system," which he followed with a Holocaust reference. "Stupid people annoy me," the post read. "Put them in an oven and deal with them the Hitler way. Haha." In a 2013 post, according to the Sun, Hamill suggests reading Jewish jokes makes him feel better about himself and helps him sleep. He then offered one of his own: "What's the difference between boy scouts and jews? Anybody know?" the post asked. "Well it is because Boy scouts come back from their camps." GPD spokesman Ben Tobias offered nothing further on the details of the complaint or whether the discipline is associated with the Facebook posts. On Sunday, a selfie of Hamill and two other GPD officers "getting ready to do some work" as Hurricane Irma approached drew thousands of internet admirers. Hamill is the bearded man in the middle of the photo. The selfie drew copycats from agencies across the country, who showed off some of their best-looking men in blue in online posts. GPD's original post could not be found on Friday afternoon.
