calmar 22,768
Storm surge near Naples, FL restricted to only 5 feet instead of predicted 10-15 feet due to inward track of a now Category 2 storm.
JustaMonster 4,909
Has the storm been as bad as they predicted it would be? I know some areas have been hit pretty hard but it seems like since its been over land that it has weakend a lot. It doesn't even have a well defined eye anymore. Hopefully it continues to weaken Hands up to the sky, I'm about to fly!

Hopefully it continues to weaken I don't believe so, no. It's still too early to know just how much damage has been done to where the eyewall went over (western Collier County, Key West) but the sustained winds are under 50 mph in most places, and the storm surge predicted to be between 10-15 feet in Naples only got up to 5 feet. What about Miami? It seems like it was spared the worst part of the storm. I haven't heard people talk about it so I'm hoping that means not much is going on. Hands up to the sky, I'm about to fly! It got a good storm surge (there are videos on the web now, esp. on Twitter, of flooding on Brickell St.) but it wasn't too badly damaged. I think two or three cranes fell, but I don't think roofing was blown off or whatever, mostly just downed trees or snapped branches.

Flooding is happening closer to the coast but we're built to withstand it. Aside from my being a drama queen, it doesn't seem to be making Florida any flatter then it already was. It's still too early to tell. It's stuck behind a certain type of system which is making it spin around in the open ocean with a strong wind shear effect. It's already a Cat 3 and still weakening. Now it's possible that in another week, after the thing blocking it moves on, it will move west and hit the gulf stream, but that's a long shot that people should not panic about. The only thing Jose is doing right now is making slightly dangerous surf conditions in NC/VA.
