Grammys: Million Reasons vs. Praying

Tbh I remember literally saying "Wow" and getting goosebumps the first time I heard Million Reasons as it was something I'd never expected from Gaga and was so quietly and unassumingly stunning from the instrumental to her vocals and everything in between. Plus it was so original for the trends at the time. A country-tinged ballad going to Top 40 radio from the queen of electronic pop music? So left field and such a good reward. I had no such reaction to Praying. It didn't really move me and sonically wasn't as memorable. That may just be me but I don't see Praying getting a nom for this reason. I wouldn't be sad if it did, though, unless it took MR's spot.

Million Reasons is a top 5 hit with exposure (Superbowl performance) from a 17-time nominee and 6-time Grammy winner.

Kesha never got a single Grammy nomination in her career and the song wasn't a big sucess.

If we learned one thing from Gaga losing her Oscar it's that the old white men voting don't give a **** about rape.

Lady Gaga has been more of a Grammy darling than Kesha, she has the Superbowl momentum and the song is actually platinum peaking in the top 10.

I think that a lot of people here keep bringing up the idea of Praying getting a nomination because Kesha is serving what they at least hoped to get from Gaga.

They be like: it's ok, we'll tolerate a ballad, but, please girl, serve them visuals. And Kesha served an Akerlund-directed video for her radio single, something we as Gaga fans have been hungry for a long time, but Gaga keeps us on a diet.

I have no harsh feeling towards Kesha, but, first of all, Gaga is stronger vocally in her song. Kesha does something interesting in the second verse and then brings the whole choir to finish the song, but Gaga's voice in Million Reasons is more natural, less filtered and stronger. She does rely on the help from Hillary Lindsey, but she is stronger on her own two feet vocally than Kesha is.

Secondly, the melody. Million Reasons wins because of its simplicity and intentionally understated production. The melody of Million Reasons allows so much tuning and reinvention, and I think it also counts towards the chance for Song of the Year.

Finally, let us not forget that Grammy is an award handled by a private committee which consits mostly of the industry establishment. We don't know how that industry establishment reacted to Kesha's legal battle with one of the biggest producers in the industry a.k.a. Dr. Luke, who is a four time Grammy nominee himself.

We have seen support for Kesha from her peers, but there has also been much talk in the industry about the fact that New York Court dismissed Kesha's claims of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender violence, and she dropped her sexual abuse case in Los Angeles, too, so they say that all her claims remain unverified by the court, and there may be a lot of committee members who believe her whole case was an affair to just renegotiate new terms of contract, and thus are unlikely to vote for her.

Of course! She's a part of the Grammy committee herself and anything she puts out will get nominated. Its guaranteed a ROTY/SOTY/Pop Solo/Best Video nomination.

You do realize SOTY is for lyrics right? and that song has some of the most cringiest lyrics in recent history. ROTY is a possibility cuz the song is a huge success. Praying and MR has amazing emotional lyrics so they have higher chances. Gaga has been campaigning for a while so it's very likely for a nomination, Kesha should start campaigning if she wants that nod which she could easily get if her label starts pushing the song more

Praying getting a nom would be a big surprise since it peaked under the top 20 on Billboard because lbr, the Grammy's care about commercial performance unless you're an indie band or old veteran. There's also the fact that they never even nominated Kesha at her peak. It would be super impressive if she gets nominated this year. I also feel that Interscope are far more likely to lobby harder for a nomination (they're the ones that wanted Gaga to do the Superbowl and successfully got her there). If Gaga doesn't get in, I don't think it will be for lack of effort on her label or managment's part, it would be the Grammy committee's oversight.

Also, speaking of Taylor, it would be hugely comical if Taylor's mess of a song get in Song of the Year. It was bad enough she won AOTY over Kendrick last time. :madge:
