River 116,173
It's the easy music turned serious case. Sean Paul always wanted to do a serious album about the violence in Jamaica but he always ended with the fun party songs and the woke political songs ended in his mixtape. Britney flopped when she changed her image from the sweet little girl to the sexually free woman, it took the GP a few years to love her again with Toxic. Can you imagine now if suddenly a bubblegum pop/eurodance artists will become serious? like Aqua or the Vengaboys *they're still active yas*? nobody would listen to them, they would flop. This is her problem, she came with a certain image and genre and now she's trying to change that, not possible, people will not buy it. So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
TropicOfCANCER 6,292
she tried to make "woke" music while doing tone-deaf after tone-deaf action. It came off as incredibly insincere. The image is whack (i love short hair and some girls rock it--like riri--but katy CANNOT pull it off and it still hasn't grown on me). The music, especially the first single, is incredibly bland. The album as a whole was extremely forgettable. BA's initial reaction was extremely negative and that was the final nail in the coffin on the era. This may be a valid point, but here's the thing. 99% of the world aren't stars, so who can relate? Why would people care to hear about the "plight" of how the media treats celebrities. It's unrelatable, and actually doesn't reflect a genuine social issue.

It is an aspect of the society, but I link more to the Witness theme - like people witnessing her stardom.
LordEnigma 11,313
No, I think it's more that she was not consistent about her image or message with Witness. She went from CTTR (a song that alluded to the current political climate) to Bon Appetite (which is about sex with really no other interpretation). And then Swish Swish was promoted simply because they were trying to get attention and brought up TSwift. Its also just an overall terrible album
SychosSoChic 9,995
One political song hiding behind enough metaphors to keep mommy and the record label happy does not 'purposeful pop' make. Life ain't Hollywood for any one of us.

She basically put the last 30 seconds in the video to send some kind of message when the song itself doesnt even vehiculate it. its only a sex song. AlexanderMagno 10,746
No. The album is not as good, she wasn't able to properly target her public and no one's here for her at the moment. It's quite simple. Pop fans in pop forums like to analyse this stuff, but truthfully no one outside these forums truly gave that much attention to the "purposeful pop" thing. I used to think this about the song before the video was released. Anyways songs can have multiple meanings.

THIS , the GP don't give a **** about the interviews , concept of albums or things like that(only fan bases), they only listen to the BOPS and sometimes they but the albums. my friends who like katy's past hits don't care about albums or things like that , and definitely they don't know that she's flopping. a friend of mine likes Feels but that's all (also definitely they have no idea of swish swish existence)
River 116,173
I must add that Swish Swish is the weakest "reply" song that ever being made.. Even the Xtina parody reply song to Eminem was stronger.. So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Brolysskins 4,166
It just wasn't a good album. The songs aren't good and thats Tea. I love Chained to the Rythm and Swish Swish, everything else kinda just sounds bleh.
nattuggla 21,799
It's a combination of many factors: - politics - haircut and style - absence of Dr. Luke and Bonnie McKee - messy decisions by her team (single politics and tour dates) .......
