LordGa 257
Lorde is probably the closest, but Gaga's debut was revolutionary. Love both of them
NotMyFlop 1,979
Gaga will probably be the last massive out-of-nowhere-star. That's not me being delusional because I love her, but it's because the game has changed. She debuted right at the beginning of the internet/social media revolution when the full potential of how internet, pop-culture and music could affect + influence each other was realized. This is why VERY few people today are captivating forces. Everything on social media ages fast, and it quenches for the next viral thing to discuss instead of relishing what's current. Artists have to rely on social to media to earn their following, and most modern celebrities (Shawn Mendes) really earn small fanbases before they make it big. Think about it. Katy Perry is pretty much being forgotten by GP, Gaga's impact now compared to 2010-2011 (her arguable peak) is nothing. Bieber, while a streaming FORCE, still isn't the total package as he used to be. With "normal" people becoming internet sensations, the days of breakthrough celebrities are over. There honestly isn't a tour de force right now, you just have some major artists that can get streams and views. Gaga debuted and she had the streams, sales and views. News cycles talk about her provoactive art, her fashion, her following on social media. Everything she did was an event. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing or seeing something about her. What celebrity has that today?
LordGa 257
Lorde and Gaga are both those artists that made a really huge impact on pop though, both had plenty of imitators but not quite like them though, so cheers to them
RAMROD 109,715
Yes she is. Not only bonafide awards for both her music and fashion, she achieved much more beyond that. She got lots of respect from both, her peers, and her seniors in this business. Everyone in this know who she is and what she capable of. There are nay sayers of course, but they are the minority. And she performs with many living legends because her vocals is very versatile. All of these happened when she was in her 20s. And she'll likely continue to create a lot more achievement in the future. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ dancin' until i'm dead (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡
ItsTommyBitch 12,640
Most likely. To me, and I think to real pop music aficionados, Lorde has the offerings to be the next "great" based on the way people talked about her during Royals and PH era. She certainly has the talent, but will she have the commercial success? I don't expect it. Times have changed too much. Lily Allen was right in Sheezus tbh "Lorde smells blood, yeah, she's about to slay you Kid ain't one to **** with when she's only on her debut" I think of the "pop" artists to debut since 2008/2009, Gaga, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey are definitely some of the more important in terms of shifting the musical and cultural landscape, with Gaga's influence being the most obvious. Lana's debut was mired by mystery, irrational hate and accusations of artifice after spending years loving the mystery and artifice of artists like Gaga. She had bad performances, but her BtD, essentially her debut, has sold over 7 million copies. I can't imagine how much different things would be if critics and commentators hadn't destroyed and mocked her in the public sphere. Now, people are realizing just how amazing and transformative that record was and how captivating of an artist she is, even more so now that she's become less pop and more alternative. I'd like to think that if she had kept going at the trajectory of BtD and had more positive press during that era, she would've held onto it with Ultraviolence and perhaps been some kind of small second coming. Now her influence has been relegated to a lower status. Her aesthetic has inspired so many modern artists, most major pop acts and even some of the greats talk about loving and respecting her music, but she's not really achieved that "one of the greats" status like Gaga has or is tiptoeing around. 私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから

SlaeUrAnus 15,976
Yes, irrefutably. Gaga had no backstory, like you said - no Nickelodeon, no Disney, just 'pre-fame' projects like that MTV Boiling Point thing etc. The Gaga-phenomenon was similar to Britney Spears circa 2000 and Spicemania circa 1997, and no one of late has come close to replicating it - not since Britney anyway. In my messy era.

Both have delivery for days though A little bit off the topic, but I do remember those juicy days when Lorde revealed some of her thoughts on Lana, here's the quote: "it’s so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know: I’m nothing without you. This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff. That’s not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear." Lorde on Lana Del Rey And how the pop forums spiraled out of control and the feuds between fans And the thing that Lana called feminism not an interesting concept when Lorde openly identified as a feminist Lana represents a completely different school of songwriting and her attitude towards her songs is very different from what Lorde tries to achieve with her music
