Petition to add black & brown to LGBT flag

REALITY

That doesn't make sense. Of course, everyone should be represented and respected. But, isn't that why it's a rainbow in the first place? Maybe I'm ignorant or something, but I never thought/associated the LGBTQ+ flag with only white people.

I'm a person of color, but I feel entirely represented when I see that flag. When I see that flag, I feel a sense of unity, a sense of love and support that everyone should be shown.

If that's true shouldn't white be added too? This is really ridiculous.

Ok..... but is it really the right battle to fight? I mean, like this petition suggests, there is an inclusion issue in the LGBT community - so we'd better work on that issue head front, rather than wasting time debating colors on a flag, really.

wouldn't that be racist against white people :lana:

White people are not a marginalized group that need protections, so no. I don't think the flag needs to be changed but the reasoning behind it is valid and based on a real lack of respect that people of color get in the community. Intersectionality means marginalized groups don't just fight for themselves, but for other marginalized groups. As LGBT people, we should understand that fighting for our rights also means fighting for the rights of black and brown people, whether they are gay or not. Black and brown people (and trans people, another often excluded group from the gay narrative) have always been leaders in LGBT rights (stonewall, etc.) but people don't recognize or appreciate it.

Where there is an ICE assault on anyone who looks Mexican and when black people are more likely to receive harsher sentences and be assaulted or killed by police for doing the same things white people do, there IS an obligation that we have as people fighting against marginalization to stand up.

Changing the flag won't change anything though, we have to change our attitudes and beliefs about what being LGBT means.

The flag isn't about race, it represents all LGBTQ+ people, regardless of race :saladga: It's really not that hard of a concept :lana:

Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.

People are too hung up on shallow things like symbolism and labels these days tbh. If you want to fix a problem then fix it, but don't offer up useless "solutions" that only change aesthetics 'cause you've done nothing to actually remedy the issue :laughga: It's not that simple. It's a looooooong process of education, patience, and tolerance. That's how every social movement is won.

...I wonder if the internet is to blame? :oprah: Our generation is so used to getting results in an instant so it's not surprising that some people would think this would affect anything at all.

No. Please see my previous post, and stop perpetuating the reverse racism lie.

Exactly, it's a representation of the diversity of the community, it's not a literal depiction of skin color.... I mean, I have yet to meet people with purple, blue or green skin.

I don't think the flag needs to be changed, but the fight of the LGBT community IS the fight of all marginalized groups, that's intersectionality. I don't think LGBT people should ignore the issues or other marginalized groups, like black and hispanic people.

I mean, the idea of a rainbow overall is supposed to be the inclusion of all colors. All of those colors can blend into one another and make all sorts of other colors and shades.

Right, and also, in this day and age it seems like communication and representation are the main topics, when we could spend all this energy towards solving actual problems instead. But it's always easier to talk the talk, than walk the walk.
