Yulin Dog Meat Festival WILL go ahead after officials refuse sales ban

THE sickening Yulin Dog meat festival is set to go ahead after local government officials refused to ban dog meat sales.

Charities last week said dog meat sales were due to be banned in the southern Chinese region on June 15, a week before the annual festival opens on the summer solstice in which thousands of dogs and cats are slaughtered in brutal conditions.

However, despite saying the ban would be strictly enforced with fines of up to £11,250 and the threat of arrest, local authorities have said today they will not authorise a ban.

A statement from the Yulin Political Affairs Director and the Yulin Chief of Police said: “There is no ban on dog meat sales during the festival as some animal rights groups have claimed.”

Celebrities including Ricky Gervais and the late Carrie Fisher joined the campaign over the past few years as shocking images of dogs being burnt alive with blow torches, beaten and squished into tiny cages revealed the horrific circumstances in which they are kept and slaughtered.

Marc Ching, founder of the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation met this week with the Yulin Food and Drug Administration, which oversees dog meat sales and food quality control of meat in the city.

Officials told him: “There is no current or proposed ban on dog meat sales during the festival.”

Mr Ching and his colleague, Suki Su, visited the two largest dog meat markets, DongKuo and NanQiao, in a bid to find out if they knew about the proposed ban.

The pair said: “In conversations with over 20 dog meat vendors, no one had any knowledge or was aware of any pending or proposed dog meat sales ban.”

An owner of one of the largest slaughterhouses in Yulin told them the festival is still happening and he is expecting sales to reach more than 2,000 dogs alone.

One vendor said: “Restaurants have already begun putting in orders, and trucks will start their travel to the province.”

He added it was usually a “sensitive” time of year, however “nobody seems to be protesting like they have in prior years”.

Mr Ching, said: “I feel so sad for the dogs that will die and suffer because of these mistruths. 

“Usually there is a huge international pressure before the coming days of the festival, but this year there is not. 

“The only way we will see Yulin end, is by people continuing to stand up to speak for the animals.”

If you eat meat, have leather, wear fur, and wear skin based shoes I think it is extremely hypocritical to oppose this when you continue to buy from an industry that rapes, tortures, destroys the environment,  and kills animals for you to consume. You can't oppose one and support the other, it is hypocritical.

although I strongly dispute the horrendous treatment of the animals during the festival, how are cows, pigs, dogs any different? Just because the west has domesticated dogs does not devalue other kinds of animals. Our negative perception of eating other types of meat besides beef or chicken is extremely ethnocentric and hypocritical.

Obviously what's going on is sick and disgusting on so many levels, but at the same time, it makes me wonder: from a western point of view, this is disgusting not only because of the incredibly cruel methods they use, but because it's dogs. I feel like we have this double standard because it's dogs and "OH THEY'RE SO CUTE AND THEY'RE 'MAN'S BEST FRIEND'" and all that, but then at the same time we don't necessarily care as much when it's sheep, or chicken, or cows, or goats, etc. 

Like, would we still have the same problem if the dogs were killed in a humane way? Honestly, probably, because they're dogs and we, whether you like it or not, see them on a different level than a chicken, cow, etc.

Absolutely, which is why I am vegan. 

And having watched all the horrifying footages of slaughterhouses and farms throughout the world, the cruelty I've seen inflicted onto dogs and cats at Yulin — as well as at dog meat restaurants in Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. — is on another level of violence / hell - and as an Asian myself this is an issue that's even closer to my heart / life.

BTW - It doesn't really make sense for one to say / imply that just because one has not yet adjusted to veganism that they shouldn't care about dogs / cats being boiled alive at Yulin. Compassion/empathy isn't an either / or - It's really about each of us doing our best to remove as much suffering from the world as possible.

Yeah I eat meat, I love it and not going to stop, I hate how the animals are treated, I hate when male chicks are being killed after 1 second of being alive, I hate the meat murderous market, but I love to eat meat, I understand your fight and I support it, just don't terrorize me, I had enough terror in my life, I don't need it in my food.

Am I hypocrite for hating this market? maybe,  but I don't care. none of you knows me to horribly judge me by writing some nice speeches for a few likes..
