Canada Retaliates Against USA Trade Threats by Threatning US Coal Ban

The Premier of British Columbia has started the Notion of banning US Coal from being imported or sold using BC ports in which the US depends as a trade route for a significant portion if its sales in response to lumber desputes.

 

Though it started from the BC Premier Trudeau stated he would strongly consider the suggestion in order to use as bargabing chip in trade deals

 

Trudeau has gotten tougher in his speech. When Trump was first elected Trudeau spoke of co-operation and figuring out compromises between both Nations. Now instead hes speaking more about retaliation moves, bargabing chips and even possible legal actions in order to defend reasonable concessions.

I'm glad Trudeau is thinking of retaliating. You can't let Trump do just whatever he wants. I was afraid Trudeau would be weak and let President Cheetoface have his way, but this is very reassuring.

Unfortunately the US is still more powerful than Canada. We may yet get screwed over

I'm surprised Trudeau has become rather abrasive. Canada is very much dependent on the US in terms of military power and overall protection. Hopefully Trudeau is aware of the kind of consequences that the country might face if he continues to butt heads with Trump. Everyone knows that Canada has been free-riding the US since the constitution. I don't think it's very reassuring that Canada now wants to stand up for itself after years of camaraderie.

I dunno about "free-riding". Canada is just outside the top 10 biggest military spenders and we contribute to Nato just like other Nations in the Alliance. We should not be expected to spend a crazy 20% of our budget on Military just because the US does

 

The Anti-Missle deflection system much of Canada is protected by isnt costing the US extra nor are they doing it purposely. Their defense system range works by a certain radius and as a result it partially goes into Canadian land protecting some of our most populated regions. Thats not free-riding, its a technicality of how their system works

 

As for our Free Trade Deals, i cant speak to every single technicality but over-all both Nations Benefit

 

Trump is just pressed that they are less compeitive because of their high business taxes and that a lot of companies prefer to operate in Canada or Mexico

 

In addition the balance of trade has more to do with energy like oil. The US Still cannot meet all its energy needs due to such a high population and they import mostly from Canada but some from Mexico too

 

If u strip out Oil, Canada and US Merchandise trade is actually pretty balanced.
