The future of pop music: No more female artists?

As some of you already know, just a couple of weeks ago marked the first time in 33 years (1984) where no women were in the BB Hot 100, top 10. Moreover, a lot of female pop stars who were once on top of the game are now suffering to even crack the top 20. I mean let's be real here, if you would have told me a couple of years ago that Katy Perry would be performing as bad as she is right now I would have probably told you to screw off. We've sort of hit a new wave where genres such as trap, rap, and r&b (male dominated genres) are impeding the success of many female pop acts. Although it was already uncool to listen to female pop music, it has sort of progressively gotten worse this year.

What do you guys think? Do you think the pop diva scene is currently dormant? How long do you think this new wave will last?

Spotify is huge among males, and as a collective young straight men don't purchase music, so artists like Drake and Ed Sheeran appear much bigger than they are. Women go along with what their boyfriend's listen to, and a lot of artists nowadays are image artists. Lana and Drake are image artists imo, artists that you listen to because you want to project a certain image of yourself, or your friends like them. Female pop acts don't project a desirable image.

I have no idea how long this new wave will last, but it's just a wave... We live in an era when something happens in one day and everyone starts analysing it as if it defines the distant future. I don't think this "male dominance" will define the future of pop music. Anyway, female artists have always been associated with a strong image, a more targeted audience, and they've had their dominance.

Things have slowly been going in this direction for a long time, and the outlook for female artists gets bleaker by the day. I have very little hope for the future of music now that streaming has turned music into fast food. Music quality across the board has plummeted since the advent of streaming. Why invest in making high quality music when a quick feature or a paid spot on a spotify playlist will do more good?

They don't? I think he appeals to women and men of the heterosexual persuasion.

I totally agree with you! I mean, when Madonna was at her peak, girls and gay men (& straight men with good taste ;) ) loved Madonna. My mom would tell me that ALL the girls wanted look and act like Madonna. Not to generalize, but nowadays it feels like a pop star like Madonna would only grasp the attention of gay men. This change is quite interesting. I'd love to do a fun thesis paper on it.

If Taylor Swift flops then our Pop Divas have failed and should change up their game and work on different projects than their (pop) music career. Good thing Gaga has ASIB, and a Jazz career to cushion her fall.

Madonna could release another Hung Up and it would probably flop due to sexism and ageism today. The Cure would've probably been a top 15 hit pretty easily if it was a Chainsmokers song featuring Gaga. DJs and rappers are the monsters of the industry today. Labels don't want to invest in creating a legitimate star because it's not worth it anymore, you'll never make back money off a few viral hits.
