There's a documentary called 'The First Monday in May' which is the night the Met Gala is always held on, It follows Anna Wintour in her planning of the Met Gala and she explicitly states that she hates it when people don't stick to the dress theme. Because the red carpet is the only promotion the event gets as no cameras are allowed inside (although now people use there phones and snapchat and stuff, you aren't supposed to). It's not a strict requirement, but the theme exists for the purpose of celebrating the fashion and culture of that particular choice. It's not meant to be an event where you just wear a pretty gown that looks like you could buy it at a department store. Be daring and creative.
