The theme never was supposed to be the dress code for the night. It's just the current fashion exhibition at the MET. Over the years some people started dressing accordingly but that was never a thing.

It is. There's a documentary called 'The First Monday in May' which is the night the Met Gala is always held on, It follows Anna Wintour in her planning of the Met Gala and she explicitly states that she hates it when people don't stick to the dress theme. Because the red carpet is the only promotion the event gets as no cameras are allowed inside (although now people use there phones and snapchat and stuff, you aren't supposed to). So people are supposed to stick to the exhibit theme.

Yes, what I mean't is there has been an increase in the amount of people doing it. Kinda like they thinkthe more space they fill up the more attention they will get.

These are great tho and so are some from this year. Rihanna's look has only the train going for it. Other than that, Rihanna has had much better looks in the past.

The MET Gala exists way before Anna Wintour even worked on Vogue and even herself doesn't follow the themes.

Why is everyone on here trashing Solange's outfit? It's one of the best ones from that night

Disagree. The outfits that celebrities wear for the evening are meant to match the theme. It's not a strict requirement, but the theme exists for the purpose of celebrating the fashion and culture of that particular choice. It's not meant to be an event where you just wear a pretty gown that looks like you could buy it at a department store. Be daring and creative.  :diane:
