DeanWinchester 41,390
Since I'm done with my test, I'd just like to point out a few things that have been going on in my mind since Gaga dropped The Cure. Naturally, the fanbase was divided--monsters who have been clamoring for pure pop since TF/M days finally got what they want and it seems to be shaping up to be a huge success compared to her most recent efforts, while another part of the base feel betrayed that the avant-garde envelope pushing Gaga they love took several steps back with her artistry. I think The Cure arrived at the most opportune time and it make complete sense. How? "When people think that they know what Lady Gaga is, I want to remind them that they don't". Gaga is living up to her name--unpredictable and versatile. While the sound of The Cure may be what is easily considered "mainstream" today, the fact remains that this move is very unprecedented and thus, still kind of shows she can shake up her sound and image at the last minute. Consider that even when doing what some consider """basic""" music, she still does it excellently. Gaga doing one trendy song does not invalidate the fact that she put out some of the riskiest albums and moves in the past decade--releasing pro-gay Born This Way at her commercial peak, a country/folk-tinged Americana record in the midst of tropical EDM/dancehall wave and still also raking in decent numbers for sales. Just like Cheek To Cheek's toned down imagery was un-Gaga at first glance, the fact that it was so different still shocked some people. Gaga is in a better space now. After all the hardships she went through, Gaga is slowly adjusting better to the mental problems she had. Additionally, she finally found another paramour to bring back happiness and love to her life. Perfect Illusion was Gaga lamenting and venting out her frustrations of love that was lost, of a life that apparently was a lie. The Cure is Gaga in a better mindset manifesting as an inspirational, very atmospheric anthem--an attempt to heal herself, her relationships to her (new) man, to her fans, and even to heal her commercial status and relationships with radio. Gaga needs to remain commercially prominent, even if just barely. She needs to prove her longevity and her relevance. Sales aren't the end-all, be-all, but they play a significant role in the public and media's perception of an artist. Many would aim for acclaim instead, but we all know that many accolades these days are easily influenced by massive commercial success. Good chart performance also means she is more likely to be included in year-end lists, and thus extend her influence, her longevity and brand. Successful singles would eventually also boost her album sales (due to track equivalence) and her back catalog will continue to be visible to the general public---all very important in shaping up Gaga's path to legendary status. So if anybody else is so averse to Gaga releasing music like The Cure, at least take these into account. That's all, folks. I gotta wake up early again for tomorrow's work. Don't forget to stream the song from TTH, and yes, looped streams count. Flyin' like a 1000 Doves
Fernster7 7,922
I honestly love Joanne and I think The Cure is only better than like 3 songs on that album but I really appreciate the fact that Gaga gave me a mainstream song that I can play at parties and with my friends, and it's still quite different for the rest of the songs out there. She's doing something great for her career and we should be happy about that, it was a ****ing surprise, if The Cure wasn't released we'd be here with the third Joanne single who was obviously not going to be a huge success, the only thing I'd understand people being mad about is the fact that we are not getting more MV for Joanne songs (who knows tho). Also, little Dicster should not complain about this song. Monsters never die.
Sid 6,755
Absolutely. I love how people that have been begging Gaga for a pop song all year are suddenly complaining about this flawless surprise bop that critics are saying could be the hit of the summer?? I've been streaming TC on repeat since it dropped and you all should too ...ıllıllı c h e r r y c h e r r y b o o m b o o m ıllıllı...

giskardsb 12,565
Gaga has done light R&B before so this isn't out if character. If she releases an EP full of chill beats and rent-a-rappers though many of us will think she got desperate and sold out. I would find that very disappointing. I don't pigeonhole her in genre but she's always kept her music just outside the obvious mainstream and challenged the mainstream a bit. The Cure still has signature elements of Gaga including the big choruses and musical dynamics and natural vocals. Sounds a bit much like a spice girls tune for me but after Johanne if she wants to do a bit of straight r&b pop then fine. just don't make something that sounds like a Katy or Taylor or Ariana album. That would seem desperate.

It's hard to constantly challenge the mainstream if her power is getting weaker though. She needs to reestablish her influence again. Shame our similarities end in having the same height i hate this guy because he had twins and I always wanted to have twin sons.
