Abstract: The increasing use of “bitch” among women makes it harder to see links between the word and patriarchy. In pop culture and in everyday life, men and women use “bitch” as an epithet against women (and non-conventional men) as well as a means of expressing dominance over a person or object. Women who “reclaim” the term—by declaring themselves “bitches,” calling other women “bitches” in a friendly way, or using the term as a female-based generic—unwittingly reinforce sexism. Unlike the term “feminist,” which is tied to a movement for social change, “bitch” provides women only with false power, challenging neither men nor patriarchy.

Excerpt from Conclusion (emphasis mine): “Bitch” is everywhere, so people have become desensitized to its harms, some even enjoying its use. Our point is not that these words are offensive (though they may offend some), but that they unintentionally hurt women as a group. That most people aren’t bothered by them is disturbing, indicating that sexism is the water we swim in, and we are the fish who cannot see it. How can people be motivated to make change if nothing seems to be the matter? As one of us wrote (Kleinman 2000: 7), “If we [women] aren’t even deserving of our place in humanity in language, why should we expect to be treated as human beings otherwise?”

I don't think I said something bad about you .The article was simply irrelevant. That's all

Never thought you said something about me, you just came off as rude and unwilling to view things from perspectives other than your own. I understand where you're coming from, it can be hard to understand something you've never bore witness to or have ever perceived as a problem. Again, the article simply gave examples to some of the things I've noticed in society and modern culture regarding calling women b*tches. Not forcing you to look at it or agree with me, just thought it would be a good resource :madge:

I don't think this joke was racists at all. This is rather tame compared to other comedians and even black comedians joke about other races too, so would that constitute as racist? If he has used derogatory term in his act or even called this woman a racist derogatory term then I would believe he's a racist.

Him calling her a bitch is kinda mean tho. Like as a comedian, who really cares if one person doesn't laugh at one joke. You've got their money already and if they don't laugh at one joke just get over it.

No I do not accept that people think that opinionated women are bitches.Opinionated women that are rude and agressive maybe

You can continue to deny reality, you can continue to ignore the articles and the users that have quoted you, you can continue to believe that if you can't see something it can't be real.

Just stop quoting me with your delusions because there isn't anything I can say to someone who will dismiss every experience, every article and every iconic quote thrown at them in order to retain their sense of reality.

There is nothing I could show you to change your mind, you will continue to place your fingers in your ears and stubbornly hold on to your make belief opinion.

Our main difference is that I use arguements and I have actual opinions and you just talk about how delusional I am and you quote stuff without actually making ANY points.

I agree that the overusing of the word (like any word) has a negative effect but really the word is just a metaphore than people use for rude women (or they use it for fun as said in the post which I don't really like either). This quote  “If we [women] aren’t even deserving of our place in humanity in language, why should we expect to be treated as human beings otherwise?” might sound poetic and smart but it doesn't really make a point. We use many animal words as metaphores for people's attitudes like "pig" .It's not like people think of dogs when they call someone a bitch or a pig

But the gag is they have been making actual arguments, you've just been ignoring every single point they've made, my guess is because you see arguments as an opportunity to push your opinions without listening to the other side, that's how you're acting anyway :giggle:

So tell me if I'm wrong but you just said that the word bitch has negative effects but it doesn't matter because it's a "metaphor"? :oprah: Again you're ignoring our points, what you said clearly reflects @666 others 's article saying that the word is still harmful but its so overused that many like yourself have no concept of what the word means and how it can effect somebody.

I've actually answered to every single point they've made,I did not ignore any point or argument from the others.

Also I think that every overused offensive word has a negative effect on society.I just don't find it sexist. A word's meaning can change based on how the society uses it btw. Words are just a way of people expressing their thoughts. When people don't use bitch as an offensive comment,it is not an offensive comment anymore (and I am not talking about a random person waking up one day and deciding that bitch will have a different meaning, but when it happens to the whole socitey gradually)

This thread is so confusing :duck: it's about George Lopez but we're talking about feminism.

If I call someone a bitch, it's because they are acting like one. Man or woman. It doesn't matter. Just something I'd like to add to this topic :toofunny:

I actually don't think that saying that about Latino people makes him racist, hes just addressing that racism exists in his community (or its a popular stereotype, which is then at least more problematic)

It's more of the fact that he turned it into a joke that's problematic and or racist... Because it encourages laughter at the idea of latinos and black people getting together; it's being seen as so unrealistic or unfavorable that its humorous :gum:

The discussion about "bitch" is off topic, but just to throw my two cents in there. The word "Bitch" has a complicated history with sexism and it can still be used in a sexist manner today, although many women have reclaimed it, this is a local phenomenon (e.g. just because Cindy says you can call her a Bitch jokingly doesnt mean every woman in the world will react the same), same goes with other people saying Bitch in any light. (So yeah, Gay men don't get a pass on sexism just because they don't find girls sexually attractive :laughga: )

Calling women bitches in a negative light is never okay, because the word is gendered. If you're defending "But some girl is acting really rude and mean" why don't you say that? By choosing to use "Bitch" you are acknowledging that the term is gendered and making an insult on a gendered axis, which is pretty much the colloquial definition of a "sexist" action :emma: That is all

Calling men bitches can also invoke emasculatory bullshit (where you are comparing a man to a "woman" as an insult) and it is often still used that way ("stop being a little bitch" anyone?) and thats also hella sexist. Don't call people bitches in a negative way, and imo sparingly call them that in a positive or neutral way if you have permission. I know lots of people that avoid using it at all, but also some feminists that feel its okay. I'm kinda on the fence, and most of the time when I use it, it kind of just slides out of my gay mouth :laughga:

Like, I only use it with other woke gay men and even then, im really picky about it... I'm also black though and use it as kind of an expletive or excitement or joy, or comraderie. I don't refer to my friends as "my bitches" or anything :emma: It's like yelling "****" to me or calling a gay friend "sis"

1)It's different speaking up and having a bad mean attitude.. Nobody calls opinionated women bitches (at least not most people).

2)Same goes with rejection.People don't call a woman a bitch because she tells someone she isn't interested but because she can be snob and narcissistic.

Bitch has exactly the same meaning that the words I mentioned before have and I find that pretty obvious.

I never said you are bashing him for being a man ,I am saying that if he was a woman you wouldn't make it much of a deal.

I'm not taking sides in the argument but just wanna point out that these ones I highlighted are not always true. One may not necessarily be sexist for calling a woman a bitch (she may very well be a bitch) but definitely there are people out here who will call or consider a woman a bitch if she expresses an opinion (especially in a way confident men do) without any narcissism or attitude. I see it often enough.

Everything you said!! :golfclap:

I'm also quite torn about the appropriateness of "bitch" in any context, affectionate or shady or whatever. I think there are so many other words in the English language and even in foreign languages that you can use in lieu of "bitch" that are neither gendered nor has sexist subtext, why use bitch at all?

this is true and this is why I used the phrase (at least not most people)
