It's because it's Gaga. Every new hit by any other artist is instantly on the race to a billion views within the year while Gaga always struggles. It's so easy for a new music video to surpass 300M views in a few months yet Gaga only has two videos with that amount of views, and both are from her earliest eras.

If PI were by another currently-relevant artist, even if it were the same video, I guarantee it would have more than double the views it does in reality.

 

I admit I haven't watched the PI video much because all the flashes and cuts bother my eyes.

As much as I love Perfect Illusion, and it's video, it doesn't do well because of 3 things:

1) No replay value - Like I said, I love the video, but it doesn't have the replay value. It's difficult to watch, and the flashing makes you feel like you're having an actual seizure. No hate or anything, again, I love it, but it's not like you're going to watch it 24/7

2) Song's performance - Perfect Illusion just didn't do well, and unless it gets some sort of huge resurgence, it just wasn't a commercial hit.

3) The artist and their relevance in mainstream media - The Weeknd is just an overall more popular artist at this time. While Gaga's still very much relevant and popular, compared to The Weeknd, right now, she's not.

What is so hard to understand? More people will watch a music video for a song that is more popular.

Lmao at y'all who think you have it all figured out and think PI is a bad song just because it wasn't a chart success.

The song wasn't promoted, hence the low view count. It's not that hard to look at and notice. 

 

But I do have a theory Gaga is planning a slow, uphill comeback. PI was very Lowkey. And now she's actually promoting; but with JW Gaga was the most pop we had seen her in a while... and she's been growing more eccentric. It seems like she's building up to PopGa to me, idk. I think the Superbowl will have a lot of good surprises.

You guys have to remember that this music video has a lot of views because it's his first single from his new album after winning Grammys, new sound, promo videos, storyline, album hype, DAFT PUNK collaboration.

Gaga doesn't have over 300m views because honestly, she's not "the cool artist" anymore, not a lot of people care about her music now like back in 2010-2011, plus she's going for a more chill vibe this time, something that turns off a lot of people. Also, Perfect Illusion was just part of Spotify's new music thing but didn't have that explosive response. Should I even say it wasn't well promoted ? She just did radio interviews and they let the song sink. The song is good and I love it now, but I didn't like it when it came out, which is probably the general response that people get when they listen to it.
