Do great artists have to suffer?

I always think that suffering and pain are the only way to create great art.

"However, I never claimed that art cannot be produced without suffering, only that art produced without suffering is not likely to be very good. Why? Because the central function of an artist is to convey an idea. That idea can be visceral or intellectual; it can be conveyed through a painting, a song, a poem, or a guy dancing around in a moose costume. The method doesn’t matter. Artists, both brilliant and hackneyed, create out of the same basic desire to communicate. But it’s we art lovers who invest our attention, our time, in their creations. Why should we invest in a work of art that was created without conflict, or struggle, or pain? Where is the challenge?"

I don't think artists should "suffeeerrr!11!!", I just think they need to be true to their emotions to make genuine art. This emotion can be sadness but also happiness, lust, anger...

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

It's not like it's hard to suffer in the world, people make it very easy.

It's just.... I don't like the wording of this. It reminds me a lot of when Little Monstrosities cheered and celebrated when Taylor & Gaga broke up because she makes "better bops when she's heartbroken."

I wonder what they would do if she said "I want you all to end your relationships in order to understand my music and buy it" :poot:

Most artists tend to create masterpieces when they are even highly happy(ROL Madonna was pregnant) or when they are suffering /going through hard times like Gaga.

Intense things bring the best out of people.

Not at all. Art doesn't have to be born out of suffering, it can be born out of any emotion strong or weak.

Hell, it doesn't even need emotion. There are plenty of pieces of art out there whose creation had nothing to do with emotions or feelings and they are still masterpieces.

So while suffering can definitely be channeled by a great artist it isn't the defining factor.

It depends on the artist, really.

I think what is just genuinely needed is motivation. A need to do it. Artists are only artists as long as they are creating.

Plus art is so subjective. What may be a commission to pay the bills may end up being seen as your magnum opus, while the thing you pour all of your emotion and time into is just seen as "meh".

For me speaking personally I feel like I only do pain creates a sense of urgency to make art when you're an artist. And the millions of feelings you can't explain, and feel the urge to put it out in some way creates something magical. But I don't think it necessarily mean in order to be great artistically you have to suffer. So i'd answer with a yes and no
